The .22 is still viable as a training gun since if really shows what you are doing wrong with its lack of recoil. If you have your fundamentals down then you can pick up any gun and shoot it well. A .22 is great for working on your fundamentals.

It's not worth training with to me at those prices. I've shelved my .22's for now.

Add also low noise to go with non recoil and you have a perfect "training" gun for youngsters and first timers. No intimidating "BOOM" and "RECOIL" to instill bad flinching habits from the get go. Which need "unlearning" later.

Ten cents a round still beats 30 cents.

Great training round pistol or rifle! Just healing up from a surgery, went shooting 2 weeks ago, went yesterday. Prices go up, I just shoot for accuracy & let friends shoot less. The AR craze, I had ammo, just slowed down while shooting. Dialed in my Tikka .308 & .22 Raptor yesterday 100/50 indoor. 'MERICA!
Yes I took the pic, no I didn't go swimming!

Not a war on you but since you feel that a dime a training shot is too much to spend, what then are you shooting? 3-4 times money per shot to shoot your larger caliber?
If you can shoot anywhere other than pay by the hour here's a suggestion: Don't completely load up the ten shot .22 magazine. Shoot three to six rounds and then examine your target placement. Tape up the holes, reload the same amount and shoot again. This method will really stretch out a fifty round count box.

I like shooting my 22/45, its fun and its still cheaper to shoot than my 40. I try not to worry about ammo so much nowadays, if i find it cool and i try to be a better steward of it. Life is too short to worry all the time. Just shoot and have fun.

I'll toss in another training idea. Airsoft pistols.. Many are very realistic in size, weight and operation to the handgun it is patterned after. Ammo? 2,000 BBs for around $12.00. Far cheaper than .22 LR.

.22 lr is great for training, but if the price of .22 lr is close to 9mm steel case or reloads, whats the point? Just shoot 9mm...

                            I have a Ruger .22 pistol:

I originally bought to teach my son to shoot, since (at the time) he was a bit intimated by my 9MM at the time. Even though .22 ammo prices have gone up (to put it mildly) it's cheaper than my 9MM to shoot.
