"Final Price Drop" and other funny musings...

I enjoy browsing the classifieds, both for product content as well as how the ads are written. There are a few key phrases that never fail to put a smile on my face, such as:

"rare" - if someone has to tell me how rare something is, my immediate assumption is they think it's rare (whether true or not) and by informing so, it justifies the over priced listing.

"final price drop" - this one always gets me. Ummm, the reason your gun is not selling probably has something to do with how you've over priced it. Just like real estate, the market is what the market is and will sell for what the market will bear (save some deep pocket collector willing to pay any price). The funniest part, to me, about "final price drop" is I see it as just the current price and anything/everything is negotiable. If the prices is too high, even at "final drop", it just wont' sell.

"back to the safe" - I usually see this with some sort of time box like "if it doesn't sell this weekend, back to the safe". Okay. So where is it now? Probably in the safe. I call this threat selling. The only problem is the "threat" of putting is back in the safe (LOL, where it currently is) doesn't actually harm anyone or actually motivate one to purchase. So it's a false threat. Very similar to final price drop. Take it now or else....

It's the little things in life that make me laugh.

Ebay now it's popular to state "last one" in bold, I'm not buying in that case. I generally stay away from psychology if I hear/see it.
Yes I took the pic, no I didn't go swimming!

I also like cruising the classifieds here & the one thing that always makes me laugh are the prices here.

it's either way above what it should be brand new and that it
" is rare, barely used, hardly ever shot, maybe 5 rounds through it."

Or the firearm is priced right where the market should be, yet nobody's buying because as someone once put it here most Cal gunners are looking for a big bargain & " have t-rex arms and ankle pockets."

but every now and again there's someone that under priced their item and has 15 "I'll take its"...
I'll take it second, I'll take it 3rd, I'll take it fourth, and so on.

sometimes the seller realizes that he has underpriced is item and then pulls away from the sale.
maybe they listed later or sell it someplace else... I don't know.

that said I think the system is probably better than an auction site. But I'd love to see a Calguns sister auction site were a percentage of the proceeds went towards the Calguns foundation.

Then they might have the financial ability to go after every unlawful 2nd amendment confiscation/arrest case.

+1 on the dozens of "ttt"s! If it hasn't sold by the 7th bump, it's not going to sell by the 439th.

OP, my thoughts exactly with the going back into the safe thing. I don't care where it came from or where it's going. Just state the price and get on with it!

I was going to buy a FNS-9 from the marketplace. Needed to sell my SP01 before hand to have the funds. Needless to say, the seller pulled the listing after a few bumps. Back into the safe I guess.

I don't think i have seen anything for sale with more than 500 round through it.

Its like 500 is the magic median number.

I've seen some competition guns with thousands through listed.

The problem is at that level you have to inspect in person to find problem associated with that level of wear (frame cracking, worn or broken parts, battering, etc.)

There's a special needs seller in Ammo right now selling over priced 22's. He posted two seperate ads for the different brands and proceeded to bump both 3 times in the last 12 hours. I'm with the OP, and find lots of humor in the classifieds. Lots of good deals to be had too, if you're patient!

I don't think you understand how selling things works. Do you realize how many months the average gun/product sits on a shelf at a shop in a non panic time? Many guns/accessories sit on the shelf 6mo or longer before a buyer comes along, but low and behold the shop makes money, or has a sale and makes less money, but still makes a profit in time. You don't see a shop selling a gun for half price and losing money just because they haven't sold it in a few months.

It may take months for a buyer to come along for a private party sale firearm, especially something that's a collector or not your standard Glock/AR/AK etc. If the seller isn't in dire need for $ then there is no harm in listing it for the price he wants and keeping the thread bumped so it might catch the eye of someone browsing the first couple pages of the classifieds. Furthermore, bargain hunters are on here by the thousands so many people list the firearm a bit over what they actually want to leave some room for negotiation, it's pretty common and smart.

"Going back in the safe" is just a polite way to let people know you're going to stop logging into Calguns to see if you have interest. Not everyone logs in here frequently or wants to deal with lowballer PM's.
