1911 frame, single stack, 40 cal?!?

I am interested in a 40 cal (single stack) 1911. This seems to be a hard item to find in California.
Is it possible to build one from a 1911 frame? For example, if I were to find a used 1911.
    Has anyone tried? whats involved?
Is it legal in Calif. to convert a registered 45 1911 to 40 cal?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

You need a new top end: slide and barrel. You might also need a new ejector. Oh, and of course the appropriate magazines.

As far as the law goes, there is no prohibition on modifications once you own the gun.

SA makes a compact carry 1911 in .40 but I don't believe its on the list. Have you thought of trying out a 400 corbon conversion?

Easiest conversion is probably a 10MM to 40S&W.

There's a couple of Kimber 10MM's on the Califiornia list now, they'll convert them to 40 S&W for $350 (new barrel, extractor, ejector, not sure what else).

I think they only sell the Stainless models here... I'm waiting for a 'blue' frame
