I would just register them since grandpa has passed away my POV as a lawman of 33 years.
If the firearm is ever stolen you have a chance to get them back. I heard of guns returned after 40+ years. Don't register them and you will never get them back. A 'know it all' had his home burglarized and wanted to report that his grandpa's Colt 45 automatic stolen. Serial number? Told me I can call the Army to get that info on Private Bubba who was in the 1st Army on D-Day 1944. Yeah the Army recruiter got an app for that
