    1911 from deceased father

Need some info please. My father passed in 2007. We were big into firearms and he even owned a small ammo business. Well to make a long story short, family drama caused him to shut down. After his death my mother gave me his custom 1911 since she knew he would want me to have it. It was in 2009 after she hired a locksmith to open their safe. she thought he sold it to catch up on some bills. My question is. I haven't taken it to the range because I haven't registered it yet. I was told by a coworkers that according to the DOJ there is just a form I can fill out and send in. I searched for it but its a little confusing to me. Any info on how this works or if I have to take it to a FFL would be appreciated. I've already read the intra-familiar transfer on the DOJ website.
