handgun laser's

So I was at my local range this past Saturday and a guy two stalls to my right was shooting with a laser on his pistol (not sure on brand/setup) but anyways as I was loading mags I watched him let off about 20 to 30 rounds and his shots were off drastically in all directions.. wherever his laser pointed his shot landed in a totally different area no where near close to his red dot..

my question for those who use laser's on their handguns.. is this a common trait of using one.? Or maybe this guy didnt have his adjusted correctly.. he ended up shooting another pistol and had no problems with accuracy.

The guy needs to zero in the laser to the point of aim and point of impact that is if the sights are zeroed in correctly. It's really only good for a quick center mass shot. I'd zero it in at about 5-7yrds. It's also good for a training tool for trigger control.

If it's off in all directions, perhaps it was not mounted securely. Elevation will be off if the target distance is different from the zeroed distance. This is because the laser is significantly lower than the bore. I have a TLR-2s but after experiencing the whole laser thing I'd probably just get the light next time.

Did you see what brand of laser it was. When I started shooting I bought a cheap 15 dollar laser from cdnn and it wouldn't hold zero at all. Every time I'd rack the slide it would move.

The underlying problem was not the laser but it was the trigger control.

I use CT on a M&P 45... once it's dialed in it stays zero'd

The guy at the range maybe had a cheap unit or didn't take the time to sight it in (very small adjustments make significant difference, but it can be tedious).

And as others have said, it's going to be off at distances other than what its zerod at... Mine is for HD and set for about 7 yrds... anything a little closer or farther will still be center mass.

OP said he used another pistol and was accurate... so unless he was aiming at a corner at hitting bullseye, he didn't have a problem with trigger control... I suspect the laser didn't stay zerod or he didn't take the time to dial it in.

My diagnosis was based on his shots that landed all directions. The laser may be off but it should be consistently off. The shooter changed his pistol is another key. I've never experienced two pistols that have the same trigger. Even in the 1911 trigger.

Just my two cents though.

Im gonna assume it was not dialed or sighted correctly as stated.. only reason I brought it up is the fact I myself was interested in a laser and seeing how this guy shots were all over his target it made me think twice quickly about laser's and the use of them on handguns.. but I also have limited knowledge about them and how they properly work so I asked.

you have a good point about the shots being all over the place... that takes out the idea that it's a good laser that wasn't sighted in... but a cheap laser that wont keep it's zero could be that inconsistent.

if you set up Crimson Trace properly, you won't have the same problem... they aren't cheap though.

I'm referring to the grip style laser... I've never used their rail mounted or trigger guard mounted versions...

When I first installed a lasermax in my Glock 27 I didn't have the recoil assembly properly positioned on the barrel lug. My shots were all over the place(5 shots). I took it apart and found the problem and it shoots great.

The LaserMax on my Glock 17 is very consistent and so does my TLR laser.

I have CT's on my 442 and M&P 9c, both hold zero just fine at the distances (7 yds.) that they are dialed in at.
