    Transportating in a suv

Yeah I know everyone has talked about this, I did some searches but there all conflicting. What I need are simple answers. This is what I want to do. I have an ford expedition, in the back there is a flap for the jack and tire iron that may be big enough for a small pistol bag. I would keep a gun with a trigger lock in the zippered bag. Next to it in another zippered pistol bag some loaded mags. Is this cool.

My other option is on both sides in the very back are plastic pockets for books or maps, they pop out and its like a hidden compartment over the wheel well. Could I do the same thing in there both bags together, or one on each side. Ive searched and some people say a loaded mag is the same as a loaded gun, and the gun container or bag has to have a lock? Does the trigger or gun still need a lock also? I can lock the zippered bag but its not very strong.

Im still debating on keeping this extra gun so it very well may never happen but I would like to keep it for a purpose like an emergency gun in my suv. I could also modify an ammo box to store the gun in, at the wheel well area and put a lock on that if that would be considered a locked container. It just seems alot confusing since I dont have a trunk.

that's an excellent write-up by MudCamper

any lockable bag is fine (like a gun rug)

I wouldn't put it in some places you've mentioned due to "hidden compartment" laws.

You do not need to separate the gun and mags.

So in your opinion both places wheel well area and flap for jack could be considered a hidden compartment. Only reason to put there is if anyone breaks in they couldn't find it. And the do not need to seperate gun and mags I assume it means the gun in a container but the ammo or mags right next to it in another container? If I use the gun bag with a lock on it does the gun also need a lock like a trigger lock?

Well im reading that pdf its giving me a headache with all that legal mumbo jumbo jumping back and forth, its crazy voodoo writing. No wonder lawyers charge so much.

In your situation.. locked bag that has both the mags and the gun. Something that holds the mag in place inside would be ideal.

You don't need an additional lock if the bag is locked.

I've not thought through the wheel well areas enough to exclude or consider them hidden compartments, but someone here might have a logic trail.

In the mean time, a map pocket or under the seat would work.

as far as I was told and what I understand from the handbook, those compartment does not count because they don't lock, and even a glove box with a lock doesn't count, it's better that you just use a lockable bag/box, probably get a cargo cover for your expedition, or dark tint on your back windows.

I use aluminum box and motorcycle cable locked around a hole in the SUV body, they could not cut it easily so it will be safe.

Well its all tinted, just wanted it out of the way I always keep my dog in back ( I have one of those metal dividers) so he would be right on it, thats why the wheel well area would be best. Maybe later today I will take photos so you can see what im talking about.

                    (d) As used in this section, "locked container" means a secure container which is fully enclosed and locked by a padlock, keylock, combination lock, or similar locking device. The term "locked container" does not include the utility or glove compartment of a motor vehicle.
To the best of my interpretation, there is no provision for using a trigger lock for transporting firearms in a vehicle -- it needs to be a locked, secure container as described above. I would be careful of using the compartments in the back, as they may be deemed "utility" storage, which is specifically mentioned as insufficient (and may be considered concealing).

If you really feel the need to place your gun in one of those compartments, I would use a locked pistol rug. Otherwise, consider getting a cargo cover, which is available for many SUVs.

you may want to go with a hard case and some moisture absorbers

Ok here is my trunk area and the container spot where I would like to store the gun and ammo. As you can see its pretty big and I already have items in
it so I would keep it below all those, maybe its not considered a hidden area because I store other items in it? Not sure why photos are so big,
uploaded in the small size, Here is photobucket link to all photos http://s117.photobucket.com/albums/o...igabyte/trunk/

Coool...so WHERE do you live? And do you park this vehicle on the street?? jk

I'm not sure if it was mentioned specifically, but if it's in a locked container, it could probably go in any compartment back there (obviously not a glove box as specified in PC). Are you planning on it being in a locked container, or just in the compartment in the back with a cable lock through the gun (which of course isn't a locked container per PC)?

I may modify a ammo box ( I have collected quite a few ) with a combo lock on it then gun sock both gun and ammo separately in the ammo box. I have gun socks that are silicon impregnated and alot of dessicant bags. I park it on the street, never drive it (5 years old only 27500 miles on it) Also have 7 security cameras 3 facing the veichle from all angles. If you must know I live in San Diego, does that matter? Plan on keeping a kimber custom 2 .45 with 5 mags.

7 Cam's jesus dude, I guess I won't let my dog crap on your lawn anymore ! My kimber came w/ a hard plastic case that was lock ready, If I carry mine in my truck (double cab with no shell) I just keep the case locked and slide that sucker under the pass seat or on the backseat floor with some crap (clothes or newspaper whatever I have back there) over it... you can keep the ammo in the glove box if you want. I think as long as you keep it in a locked container you can put it where ever the heck you want!

Edit: use that toolbox in the pic!
