Walther P22 vs 1911 .22lr conversion

I searched and read tons of good and bad reviews on both at the end I ended up with a 1911 .22lr conversion for my Kimber.

I can manage with ease all 10 shoots within an 1.5in group at 7 to 10 yards. Standing; two hand hold with Federal Bulk pack wallyworld type. No jams or issues of any type or shape. Super happy. Have about 500 on my frame and another couple hundred on my friends Kimber. On both guns flawless.

I still would like a Walther P22, but assuming it will work 100% is it as accurate as the conversion?
Yes, I know it is just a plinker but can a guy dream.

I have a Ciener 22 conversion for my 1911 and the Walther P22. The 22 conversion is great, but the P22 is a POS. I got it because I thought the ergos would be good to teach newbies....and it is perfect for that. The problem is that I have already sent it back to Smith once and it needs to go back again (DA will not engage and sometimes even the SA will not engage). I would says I have put around 2500 rounds through it. If I could do it over again, I would get a Browning Buckmark or Ruger. Oh and by the way, the 4in P22 is not an accurate gun.

+1, my P22 is not very accurate and the double action pull is off the chart heavy and the single action isn't much better. I bought it sight un-seen when they were first advertized thinking it would be the same size as the P99, man was I suprise when it showed up at the gun shop!

Yes it's accurate, but you likely won't be able to use bulk pack.

Just get a Browing or Ruger.

I know I've said this many times, I'm trying to defend the later P22s, I know the early P22 were crap, but the later ones are great. Mine will take any bulk pack ammo, I've tried the Federal Bulk, remington Golden bullet Bulk, CCIs, Winchesters, and even Aguila super colibri(primer only) and their Super Maximum Hollow-Point Ammo, and only 3 duds and that's because the golden bullets didn't fire, good strike no bang.

Gobbles up Win Ranger and Fed. Accuracy OK for plink. Light weight and small size for packing and beginners. But no 5" barrel kit for CA : ((
Buckmark and Ruger are far better / more accurate as range guns but much heavier to pack in and out if you do that kind of stuff.
22 conversion for 1911s work very well. Smith 41 etc for top accuracy.
Cheap plinker: Phoenix HP22. 400 mixed rounds so far and only one mis-feed.

Never buy a P22. There are a lot of great 22's out there, but walther doesn't make em.

Walther P22:

-Brass will hit you in the head a lot. (And sometimes clatter right in the gap between your face and your safety glasses.) That problem may have been fixed with the new extractors.
-Reassembly after detail stripping is an exercise in patience. (Especially the J-shaped spring and the spring within a spring.)
-The safety moves to safe on its own.
-Get the short (3.4") barrel (with laser, of course!) because if you buy the long (5") barrel you will have to remove the compensator to remove the slide. And after a couple thousand rounds the screw that secures the top of the compensator to the barrel will gouge a trench into the barrel from the recoil, or will fall off if you forget to apply blue Loctite.
-People say the hammer spring is prone to breaking.
-You can only buy the CA version.

+You can make it better by polishing parts and sanding the safety and the hammer a TINY bit.
+It is fun for beginners to shoot.
+The grip feels really, really good in small hands.
+It does get admiring looks at the range.
+It is really small and light.

I vote Ruger 22/45. Same grip angle as your 1911, great accuracy and reliability.

I have a Kimber 1911 22 conversion. The fit is great but the reliabilty is not great but getting better, just keep it oiled and it runs fine.

you can tell by your serial number it should be two alhpabet A=0 B=1 c=2 all the to J=9, this will be the year your P22 is man'd. I was told on the 05 and newer are the good ones, but I could be wrong. On your Magazine is where it is important, on your mag on the part# it should have a " A " on it, these are the later mags that cure the Jamomatic problem, and I was told there were another improvement on the P22 mags which further improve performance. All my mags I do have the " A " on it(two came with it one I bought).
As far as the 5" barrel, it's on the list so it's ok to have, check out this link

Yes I have the later mags, I did hear about that...I have 4 mags now, all work fine.
My (officially now) 3.4" barrel does not have a removable nut at the end. The manual describes a wrench and slot etc to do the 5" barrel swap, but not with or on my CA model. No threaded-end barrels allowed in CA. The safety lever action on mine is tight / firm. Maybe they worked the bugs out? Thread jacking in process...
