Anyone have a single shot upper for a 1911 I could rent for a couple weeks? If not, where is the best place to buy a cheap SS upper? Thanks.

They've become real hard to come by - GB and GA are your only real sources, so keep your eyes open.
I know a few have them, so hopefully someone will offer to help you out.

Thanks, Yeah, I have seen a couple on GA/GB but they are $800+ and will only need it for a couple weeks. Maybe I will just bite the bullet and get one.
Would use it to transfer a Dan Wesson Patriot Match custom from out of state. This model is not on safe list correct? so only way for a non leo to DROS/transfer would be as a single shot right?Comment

If it's not on the Roster of not-unsafe Approved Handguns, the only way you can acquire such a firearm is via/from...Originally posted by AfricanHunterWould use it to transfer a Dan Wesson Patriot Match custom from out of state. - in-state PPT/consignment from someone in CA who already owns one;
- someone who's moving to CA;
- LEO who decides to part with his;
- inheritance/probate;
- intrafamilar transfer from lineal relative (btwn grandparent/parent/child/grandchild only);
- Roster not applicable if gun is C&R, or
- Roster not applicable if gun dimensionally-compliant single-action revolver/single-shot pistol;
Plan B below is probably quite a bit cheaper than a Pachmayr Dominator or Springfield SASS system, even with some machine work cost, and can be accomplished without luck/wait:- have/borrow a working 1911 for fit-checking (gun won't be damaged), set barrel & action spring aside;
- acquire used/surplus/SARCO 1911 'no-gunsmithing' barrel;
- acquire working/used/junker thin-profile 22 rifle barrel;
- acquire *strong* 1911 action spring for "hot+" loads (i.e, for 10mm+);
- acquire 1911 training 'filler' magazine;
- acquire some sort of 1911 mag catch that retains mag (or whose button is flush/below grip surface)
- remove any lugs, etc. from 22 rifle barrel;
- turn down rear ~5" of 22 rifle bbl rear to ~.45" diam;
- insert fired 22 case in chamber of 22 bbl, insert bbl into surplus 45bbl installed in a test 1911 and seat back as far as possible (case head rests on slide face; this means 22 bbl protrudes above 45 feed ramp)
- precisely mark offset on protruding 22 bbl; remove bbls from 1911
- spot-weld inner 22bbl to outer 45ACP bbl, retain marked offset/position;
- cut & recrown 22 bbl muzzle so bbl is at least 6" min length, and resulting gun is at least 10.5" min overall length measured parallel to bore;
You now have the componentry of a nonsemiauto 22 single-shot pistol.
The 445 bbl feedramp is blocked by the 22bbl insert, no 'feed' is possible other than manual reload, and stiff spring prevents slide action. Irrelevant magazine has been replaced with fixed filler.
I think 1911 firing pin even as center fire will fire a 22 round and I do not think the case head will be pierced. (1911 guys speak up here.)
Once validated/tested on your 1911, ship the relevant parts above to your seller, have him install them on the desired 1911 frame, and then ship your new 12133PC-exempt single-shot pistol to your local FFL.Last edited by bwiese; 08-19-2008, 1:06 PM.

Apparently you do not understand that single shot gun must be of certain bbl length + overall length to be Roster-exempt.Originally posted by kimbercarrywhy not just buy a junker barrle.weld an extension to the barrel and a rod going into the mag well that way it won't take a mag
And I want no chance for the action to be regarded as cyclable by discharge (thus 22 + stiff spring, not 45). And I don't see any ~8" 45ACP 1911 bbls out there anyway. The above recipe keeps the pistol clearly delineated as a single shot.
Attention has already been paid in Sacramento to Roster-exempt pistol builds so we need to do this correctly and clearly be on the bright side of the line. Saving $50 to pay $$K to a lawyer ain't a wise decision.

Sounds like a pretty good plan Bill, one way you might be able to ensure the 22 is both ignited and not pierced is to have the barrel turned off center. You would of course need to start with a little thicker barrel blank to have room. It wouldn't be an easy set up but it would be possible. Maybe turn it in a four jaw chuck and supported by a steady rest? Perhaps one of the other guys on here with a little more machine time than me can suggest a good set up for turning that.Comment
