According to the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson (3rd edition), the L frame was introduced in 1981. Serial number prefixes AHS-AHT were used beginning in July 1985 and ALA-ALC were used beginning November 1985. So, sometime between July & November 1985.
It also says that S&W sometimes used serial numbers out of sequence so YMMV. -

The California market is a bit inflated so $650 - $750 sounds about right for an excellent condition one.
My 4" 686-4 sold for $650 IIRC.One Way to Post Pics ********** How to Submit an iTrader Rating That Counts ********** Brass for Sale
