Smith and Wesson model 66-2

Hi,

I found a SW 66-2 4" barrel revolver in consignment for $545 at my LGS, revolver is in excellent condition with original wood grips and of course no lock and firing pin on the hammer.

Are model 66s sought after revolvers? and if so is it a good price for it?

Please advice.

What do they generally go for? Is it better than 686? Does SW still make them?

They normally go for $550 - $650 depending on condition. It can probably fetch up to $700 if in excellent condition.

Some people prefer K-frames (66, 19) over L-frames (686, 586) because of weight and size. You can tell the difference when compared side by side. And the M66 and M19 came out before the 686 and 586 and therefore have a lot more history (i.e. people carrying them before, etc.)

It is also not unusual to hear people advise not to shoot too many magnum loads on M66's and M19's even though they are chambered for that. The 686 and 586 are just deemed to be built tougher I guess.

As with a lot of things, it boils down to preference. If you ask me, I will pick a 686 4" over a 66 4" and a 586 4" over a 19 4" nine times out of ten.

I already have a 686-1 recently bought from the same store, I want to get 66 if it has any collector value, since it has no lock.

As noted above, the 19/66 is not as heavily built as the 586/686 series. The 19/66 is build on the K frame, which is the same as the original model 10 .38 special which goes back to the early part of the 20th century, while the 586/686 series is a hybrid. The 586/686 frame is essentially an N frame, (cylinder, top strap and barrel) with the grip of a K frame; in a sense, the best of both worlds.

While we all have different ideas about perfection, I think the 19 is one of the finest revolvers ever made. Much prefer it to any other revolvers made in the last century.

Collector value is all subjective..
If you want a good shooter and kit gun..you can not go wrong with a 66..
Just don't feed it too many magnum loads at once.
My agency used to use the Model 66 but we shot practice with the same round we carried for duty..38spl+P+
After shooting about 100 rounds the gun would lock up..the heat expanded the metal.

If you shoot 38spl+P you would still be good..
The rounds we used were really super hot..US Treasury Loads..
Magnum rounds would be good also..but in limited numbers..

The amount of rounds we put through the gun would be considered abuse by S&W..

It's a great gun to have around..

Not originally designed to be shot continually with .357s, (as someone noted it is based on the .38 Special K-Frame) but the aren't enough examples of 66's that have been "shot loose" by 357 ammo to justify worrying about it.

Good price if the grips are S&W and not aftermarket (Herritts or Hogue).

the S&W Model 66 is a desirable revolver. i believe the price to be a good one for the buyer if the example for sale is in the condition described.
