M&P Shield Slide Stop Question- Problem Fixed.

OK, so yesterday I picked up my new 9mm shield. Get it home and going to fieldstrip it. Can't operate the slide stop, it won't budge.

I have two other M&P's that have given me no problems.

I tried an empty magazine in the mag well and the slide won't lock back on an empty mag!

What am I doing wrong?

So the middle lever (between take-down and safety, to be sure) doesn't move whatsoever? Made sure it's not caught on something on the frame? With an empty mag, have you tried racking it all the way back swiftly and with force?

During the entire purchase & delivery process at the LGS, no one ever locked the slide back to check the chamber?? This sounds odd.

I just had to do the whole safety demonstration, had to lock my slide back repeatedly during the process. Your dealer didn't make you jump through those hoops?

M&P Shield Slide Stop Question

I posted about the same issue around a week ago and if you Google, you'll find it's not uncommon.

The slide stop is just a bear to engage when doing it by hand (it works fine after the last round.) I've only been able to do it a couple of times. Some report it gets easier after shooting a bunch.

The slide lock works fine on my .40 shield. Although I have heard of people having problems

Pull the slide back harder. It may feel like it's all the way to the back, but it's really just a "hump" that you need to clear to engage the slide stop.

I have about 500 rounds through mine and it's a lot smoother now.

When brand new the recoil spring is extremely stiff , slide feels like it rides roughly on the rails, and slide stop feels like it's impossible to engage.

same thing happens to mine, only when fieldstripping. really weird. Locks back fine all other times though. I don't even bother locking it back anymore, I just rotate the lever while holding the slide.

I picked up my 9mm today. already cleaned and saw what you are talking about. I don't think you are pushing the slide back far enough. I attached a pic. it will lock back without the mag.
the notch in the slide is not suppose to line up with the lever. the notch goes past the lever.

I've handled 3 different Shield 9s in the past couple weeks, 2 were fine, one was almost impossible to get the slide stop to catch. Of course that was the display case model that I had to do the safety demonstration on. It felt like the lever was pressing inwards instead of upwards when you apply pressure to it, and that the piece that catches on the slide was possibly too thin. The one I took home last night has no such problem. Might want to put in an inquiry with S&W to see if they have a fix for it.

if the lever rotates, your using the wrong lever. the lever that rotates is the slide release(takedown) lever. the lever in the middle is the lever to lock the slide back.

LOL I was talking about during disassembly. I don't lock the slide back anymore to rotate the take down lever when putting it back together.
yes I know the difference between the slide lock and takedown lever.
