M&P Shield or a true pocket gun?

First of all, I have a M&P 9C as my primary carry gun. I was thinking about getting a Shield as well. But besides the width, it isn't that much smaller. It seems to big to pocket carry so it's gonna have to ride on my belt which my M&P 9C does just fine. So, should I just get a pocket gun like a LCP to expand my carry options instead? My thinking is if I'm gonna go any smaller then I should go real small.

The Shield I SSE'D but haven't shot yet actually fits in my front pockets of a lot of my pants without printing at all. But if ever was able to get CCW, the LCR .38+p I bought super cheap , even w the large Hogue grips, slips right in to any pocket I have and is really light. So if was in a rush and decided to pocket carry, even though I would probably go IWB Kydex 4 o'clock instead, if I was running out of the door in a hurry that LCR slips right into any pocket and like it's not even there.

The p238 might work but try it first. I personally can't trust the safety in my pocket.

It's way too big to carry comfortably. Sure, it may fit in some pockets, but you wouldn't want to carry it there, unless you want people asking what's in your pocket.

The Shield is way too big and heavy to pocket carry.... for most people and for most pockets. Even in my cargo shorts, the heavy Shield will make the side pocket sag and look out of place, not to mention the fact it's a little brick swinging around down there when I walk.

The LCP is what I would consider a real pocket gun, as that would fit into my front & rear pants pockets quite nicely (fitted jeans). Looked like a big wallet in my pocket with the LCP in a pocket holster, and it was much lighter feeling than the Shield or any other 'pocket pistol' that I had owned or tried at the time.

Too big for my pockets, I suggest a LCP or Kahr PM/CW series pistol.

Can it be done? Of course. I've been pocket carrying one for the past month or so now. Is it bulky? Yes. Have I been asked what's in my pocket? Nope. No one thinks that. However, I am in the process of getting a G42 and a Sig 938 that I would much prefer for pocket carry. So do I recommend it? Meh. It's up to you. Something smaller would sure as hell be nicer/easier to pocket carry.

+1 for the LCP. Add a Hogue Handall Hybrid grip and the little gun is very pleasant to shoot - opposed to much of what you read online. Maybe because it's a new gun to me, but I'll taking it out to my next few range trips for sure. Also the recent "Gen 2" models have excellent triggers. I can't compare to the triggers that the very first LCP's came with because I never shot one, but the trigger on the LCP is in my opinion a very smooth double action trigger with a short pull.

I'm adding a Sig P238 to compare. If the thumb safety has a solid engagement, I don't think I would have an issue carrying cocked and locked.

As for 9mm carry guns I think it's difficult to find one that is as small as a mini .380 pocket pistol like a LCP or P238. So if you already have M&P9C it may not be necessary to have a Shield. I like many others in Cali are just getting into the CCW world and have much to learn, so my first step is to try out all my carry gun options and get familiar with them.

Uncle mikes #4 pocket holster. It covers the trigger and safety. I'm always conscious that it's there so not worried about safety being manipulated accidentally. When in doubt, I get to cover and do a gear check. It's been good to go so far with regular bending, stooping, ladders, etc.

Pocket carry is my preferred method of carry nowadays.
