    PPT question

    Do PPT's have to be in person or can a dealer facilitate a PPT through the mail?

    For example: John wants to sell his Walther P-88 to Mike. John is in Victorville and Mike is in Redding. Can Mike pay John and then have John ship it to a Redding FFL to close the deal? The dealer just gets PPT fees because it is not a consignment.

    The easy answer is that PPTs must be done in person. Any mailed handugns would be a non-PPT transfer in which the FFL could charge any transfer fee and the handgun would need to be ROstered or in an exempt catagory.

    There have been occasional postings that there is a "gunshow" transfer that would allow non-rostered shipped handguns but it is not common, may not be kosher, and the FFLs would probably not be limited to the $35 PPT fee.

      Both individuals are required to sign the California DROS form.

          i had a dealer do me a favor and he sent the hand written dros form to the seller to fill out and send in with the gun to be transfered to me in which i filled out the top form

          it was a longarm though

          and it was a private party transfer

          it was a couple years ago though dont know if rules changed

            It's kosher, but you're correct on the other accounts - not to also mention that it takes forever and a day (there's a lot of sending documentation back and forth, signing things at FFLs, and so on) and it's really hard to find FFLs who will even do it.

            There are postings around here with the legal details from Gene or Bill (I think - I forget who laid it out) that details the process. Honestly, though, unless it's a rare/unique item it's probably not worth your pain and trouble to try and get this done.

              John and Mike have to walk into the same ffl at the same time.
