What's easier to train a rookie? (PX4 storm .45 Glock)?

I'd lke to get my wife comfortable with a few of my preferred PD options.

What do you guys would think the be easiest to teach? And make them most comfortable if they had to pull it out in a pinch?

    G30, or 9mm PX4 Storm?

    Thoughts?

Since your the only one who knows her, what do you think? Have you shot the Glock yet, do you think a "rookie" shooter will do well with the recoil? I've trained and worked with more than a few academy recruits who never touched a handgun until they were issued one at the range. So in my experience there is no way to say which one is easier to teach someone to shoot with. I do suggest you get her proper training from an instructor who will be able to observe and correct any issues she may have.

I would generally opt for the 9mm first. Even though the PX4 has a DA/SA trigger and a manual safety I think the smaller caliber will make the biggest difference for a new shooter.

Why not take her to a range, rent a few guns, and see what SHE is comfortable with? Just because you prefer something doesn't mean she will like it at all. I prefer Glocks and Sigs. My wife hates both of them with a passion. She likes her XD and I don't really care for it much. The only pistol in the safe that we both enjoy equally is my Kimber custom TLE II. You can let her try your 2 guns but if she doesn't like them, and you still want her to have the ability to defend herself, you're going to have to break down and spend some money on rentals until she finds one that fits her right. Then you get to spend some more money buying one of whatever that gun ends up being plus a couple extra mags and lots of ammo for her to practice with. My wife had never handled a gun before we got together. Now she shoots as much as she can. It will add up quick but ultimately what's her life worth to you? If my wife told me the only gun she was comfortable with is a $5000 Wilson or nighthawk you can bet your *** I would be at the store tomorrow ordering one for her.

It really will depend on your wife. I took a friend to the range and she like the HK45 better than the SP-01.

PX4 Storm is a great introduction gun. Maybe work her into a .45 auto as she becomes more comfortable. If you start her off with .45, she might loose interest.

I'm going to have to go with the PX4 just by caliber alone. The .45 ACP usually has a steeper learning curve than 9mm. I'm not saying this just because she's female, in general the lower felt recoil does not induce flinching and anticipating the recoil.

Also, double up on hearing for your wife. Part of anticipating the recoil occurs from the sound. Doubling up so gun fire is comfortable and barely heard helps tremendously with learning.

Those aren't options however mate. I only own two of the ones mentioned above.

Oh excellent, it's good that you're finally getting some training for yourself.

Basic firearm safety first and go from there.

Work on teaching her basic firearms safety and basic shooting skills. Start her out on a .22 if you have one and let her move up at HER pace as she feels comfortable. Let HER decide which one she is interested in. Your goal should be to give her the basic knowledge and skills so that she can make this choice for herself. SHE should be the one to decide which gun she want to use to defend HER life.

Another vote for a .22LR pistol, plus a class with a good instructor.

I know they start new learners on .45 1911s at Ironsights, or that is at least what they said when I inquired about my wife getting safety lessons. They said its just better to get them started out on that to get rid on anxiety of a bigger caliber and its a heavier pistol for the recoil issues.

The point I was trying to make is that we are all different and you should let your wife pick. Let her shoot a mag of each and then decide what you will teach her with. Personally, I always load only one round when teaching a person who is new to firearms. Once they know what to expect from the recoil, then they get a few more rounds in the mag.

As for the HK45 and SP01, hit the range with me, and you and your wife are welcome to shoot them.
