colts current production

i am interested in the commander or 70 series repro and want to know if you have any expierience with the current quality of their production, fit, finish, accuracy, etc.

I have a current production Combat Commander (Model 04691)-- full size frame, 4.25" barrel. Its awesome. One of my best shooters and accurate.

It seems that "everybody" wants Series 70 Colts, however, I wanted a shooter and not a safe queen. I love the way this new Commander shoots. It ate everything right out of the box-- SWC, TMJ, FMJ, JHP.

I believe you'll be happy with one of the new ones. Make sure you field strip it, clean it well and lube it before going out to the range. They still use cosmoline! Good luck!

I bought a Colt XSE Government last year and have had no issues. I think it's one of the best 1911's for the money, already comes with the usual mods people want.

I have an XSE Combat Commander like the one mentioned by H&K above. Excellent pistol, well made, tight, accurate. If there are any issues, there seem to be instances where rear sight set screw tends to back out (can be a real problem at the range if you lose it) - but putting loctite on it does the trick. Other issue seems to be that sometimes extractor tension isn't right from factory. Mine was way way too tight (caused failures to return to battery). This too is easily remedied.

I must say that most reports of XSE Commanders I've seen are glowing reports about the pistol and do not mention these issues, rather, when I've seen/heard of issues, they've been predominately around these two things.

I'd buy another or highly recommend one to anyone looking for a Commander style 1911.

I can't speak for the 70 repro or the commander, but I have some experience with the new series 80s. I was not impressed. The two I shot were both quite rough, and they jammed a lot. To be fair, one of them would only jam on the last round of a mag, but it would do so about every other mag. Also, it just felt rough shooting; sometimes after a shot you'd feel the slide returning to battery with a "ker-chunk." A good 1911 should cycle very fast. All you should feel is "blip, blip, blip."

The other was a complete lemon.

The original series 70s, in my experience, are quite nice. As reliable as a glock and way more attractive to the eye. Rumor has it that the stuff coming out of their custom shop now is as good or better than the original series 70s, but the regular line production pieces are not so good.
