USP Overhaul

I dropped my HK USP Expert 45 off for a 60,000 round overhaul yesterday. For some reason the magazines were all breaking at the top weld spots, plus the cartridges were stove piping. I had thought the mags were just old, so I bought a new mag to see what would happen. Sure enough after 2 months the new mag's welds were beginning to break. The local HK armorer didnt believe the gun had as many rounds through it as it does untill he saw the mags. After which he told me he was surprised my gun was as clean as it was and even went as far to say it looked brand new! The extractor and firing pin are still good and it will still do 1/2" groups at the 50.

+1 to HK for lifetime warranty and for 60,000 rounds with excellent accuracy.

My bulgie Makarov has the same record, well , perhaps even greater because of it's prior use by in police/military.

The my reason why I purchased a Sig over a USP, is from observations and remarks made by an owner of an enclosed pistol range. Specifically with his hassles with HK, in that they would not sell parts, but demanded to have the item returned for repairs. And of course, when you have literally hundreds of people coming everyday to rent the pistols (LA GUNCLUB), overtime one could see which designs are good including it's flaws, but strangely, when I asked the man which gun had never given him any problems, He stated to me it was a "Ruger pistol", I do not know the model , he just pulled it out of the display case and showed it to me, ugly as hell,

Roger that, I bought my P944 in '01 from Target Masters,thats the same thing I was told. The Ruger "P" series just don't break,and they will eat anything you feed them. The only gun that can double as a tow hitch and defend your home.

I've been going to Target Master's since Joe was running the place. The Rugers I've rented typically have some feeding or extraction problems, which is the main reason why I still don't own a Ruger P series. Maybe I need to revisit that soon.

I spot welded mine with a tig welder. Good as new.

Oh tig welding! Awesome idea. Ill do that if HK decides my mags are no longer under warranty. I will have to post some pics of my pistol when I get it back in 6-60 months from HK, along with my magazines. I was told by the armorer HK may not warranty the mags because I use them in competition. I thought that sounded like FUD. Any one else know anything about this, because I really do not see the difference between shooting hardball at a popper vs at paper on the public line. If anything I deserve all new mags and a hat for buying over $20,000 in HK goodies.

The welds are smaller and do not penetrate sufficiently to make a strong bond. The interlocking joint is intended to take the majority of the load while the small weld that HK does is only to keep it from shifting.

This is a known issue with USP .45 mags. 3 of my full size USP mags have cracked the top weld but they still work for now.

oh so it's for all usp 45 mags. ic, i was wondering why they surfaced after 60k rounds and then again two months later on the new mags.

HK mags are kinda pricey,but I guess 12000 rounds is a pretty good duty cycle. Thats one reason why I love my Glocks.
