"Hot" 10mm ammo recommendations

So I have a couple hundred rounds of Underwood 185gr JHP. I want to order some more 10mm, but if there is hotter ammo out there I want to give it a shot. I just want some ammo that epitomizes what proper 10mm should be...want to see how capable my Glock 20 is. I love this gun so far

wow, 220grains and 1200fps? over $1 round though.

maybe I should buy a box in case I ever go T-Rex or blue whale hunting

I've found Underwood to be the best for performance the way they advertise. Double tap not so much.

I kind of always considered pretty much all 10mm ammo hot ammo.

off the top, I would also look to see what buffalo bore and DoubleTap have to offer.

Though Underwood is pretty hard to beat, power wise.

Most factory 10mm is way under powered for what the round can actually handle. The factory stuff in general is like a .38 compared to a .357.

I think Kevin at Underwood loads about as hot as any other boutique ammo manufacturer. In fact, some of his 10mm ammo had gotten so hot, some guys running tight Lone Wolf barrels were getting pressure issues, up to and including a few kabooms, so that is proof positive Underwood is right to the limit.

In any case, Underwood is the best value in full 10mm loadings.

I have loaded well past book values in 10mm and while it is all great fun, you really don't get anything practically more usable going beyond where the guys at UW load. In fact, after doing a realistic assessment of my very hot loads, I think loads more like 1200fps for a 180gr JHP (like an XTP or Gold Dot) is all anyone might need in North America for defensive purposes.

I came to this conclusion after watching hours of 10mm ballistic gel testing on YouTube, 1200fps is about max optimal for the 10mm 180gr bullet.

I'd PM one of the guys who load commercially over at Glocktalk and have them roll me a batch of custom.

I have not tried it, but I could easily see developing a rapport with a fair and honest business person and compensating him for his time.

Might want to check if a guy's co. is insured. Be a shame if someone got hurt or lost a weapon

It's hard to beat Underwood Ammo.

Their numbers are honest, unlike some other ammo manufactures.

Sure, you could handload some 'slightly' hotter 10MM however you're getting into a 'case support' issue. When you really don't need the problems.

It's a Bell Curve that can be dangerous in 10MM reloading. Where a couple of grains of powder increases the pressure to a dangerous level while only giving you 45 FPS in speed. Not worth it.

Underwood is fine for hunting out of the box.

Want some fun? Get some underwood 135 grain at 1600 FPS and install a 6 inch barrel . Incredible CRACK and power. I reload that particular round with some Nosler HP that I buy from Midway.

We all want more Foot Pounds of energy in 10MM. 600 Foot Pounds is considered good.

You want to avoid HIGH pressures. Case failure is a bad thing in the quest for hot 10MM. High pressure looks like this:



My advice for hunting power in 10MM is to run Underwood Ammo with a long barrel. Long barrels add velocity without the use of more powder.

LoneWolf is selling 6 inch and 9 inch barrels now. A 10MM Glock rigged with a 9 inch barrel will run that already hot ammo up to 1800 FPS and more. Perfect for hunting. No over pressure..

Check hickok45 for a video on the long barrels. Very cool.
