686 3" Square Butt? What?

Could be a special run by S&W for some LEO/MIL customer.
I doubt a rebarrel, just because it would be hard to come up with a 3" barrel to swap with.
Any other marking on the gun?
Like an "M" or "CS-1" or "CS-3"
see this thread

+1, could also be a sales sample/demo unit. I bought a smith demo unit revolver that had factory fiber-optic sights a few years back - the model # on the box didnt correspond with anything out there. it was neat & "rare", but not particularly valuable - just a cool gun to shoot & stuff back in the safe. mine came with all the factory stuff, including the warranty card & the production date was 10+ years prior to purchase. robertson's on gunsamerica gets oddballs like that once in a while.Comment

Can't find anything in the SCSW. If I had to take a guess if it's not a rebarrel it would be a special edition for somebody like Lew Horton or some other distributor.
Does it have the "M?" Maybe a rebarrel was done when the recall mod was done?
+1 on looking for any other stamps or markings.
Maybe a letter from Mr. Jinks?
"He is your friend, your partner, your defender, your dog.

You owe it to him to be worthy of such devotion."

Update: I received the serial # and confirmed it has been rebarrel by S&W back in the mid 80's. No M stamp though.
I got him to bring the price down to $400, so it was a no brainer for me to buy it. Condition is about 98% if you disregard the rebarrel.Comment

$400!!
I jelly! That's a steal.
While 686 probably isn't gonna be a rare "collectible" in our lifetime the fact that the rebarrel was done by the factory makes it not a huge "minus."
Not only is your revolver rare but a lot of people consider the 3" barrel very desirable. Look at the 3" M66. Much sought after."He is your friend, your partner, your defender, your dog.

You owe it to him to be worthy of such devotion."

Agreed!
I'm just gonna shoot the hell out of it and use it as a hiking / dual sport pack gun.
It's gonna be well used yet appreciated.Comment
