Impulse Buy - Did I Do Good?

So I wandered into my LGS yesterday (STS guns, Folsom) to buy a small lockbox I could put in my car. Found the exact box I wanted, grabbed it and decided to wander around the store for fun.

Clerk asked me if I needed anything and we got to chatting. I mentioned i was interested in a pocket gun and he whips out an AMT Backup 380. Marked for 99.95. Well I have an AMT lightning 25/22 (ruger 10/22 knockoff) and enjoy it, so I start looking at it and realize this is the exact same model my Grandmother carried for a long time (shes always telling me how she loved carrying it back in her biker years) so I figured what the hell, for 100 bucks whats the worse that can happen?

Its in Jail now, so I figured id just ask what y'all think? Ive done alot of research into the gun and it seems like with all AMTs it started life with another name (OMC), and its hit and miss with popularity so it probably will just end up being a safe queen or get thrown in the BOB rather than a carry piece but for 100 bucks, what the hell right?

btw... its a first gen AMT, with the grip safety and SA trigger. not the DAO with the heavy ash trigger.

even at $200 dollars. the price of the gun, the DROS, taxes and some ammo maybe a new magazine or a part or two, to make it function 100%, from gun parts corp. it still adds up to a great deal.

as I remember they are stainless steel and that's good for a bug out bag that it's durable, although they are not the lightest in the world.

I think you got a great deal and I don't think there is one of us here it wouldn't drop $100 on a well designed -(for the 1980s)stainless steel, pocket size semi auto, made in America and the fact that you already have the AMT 10/22 version (I remember seeing those in the 80's as well and thinking how does Ruger let them get away with that?)and you like it, seals the deal.

I had the DAO version and I hated that thing. If it was only reliable, it would have been a great pocket gun. Mine was Jam Central Station and I would not spend $100 on one due to my poor experience. Some people have good luck with them though, hope you got one of the good ones!

Reliability is key... Unless you plan on using it as a blunt object to throw.

Had one many moons ago (the original design, not the DAO model) and found it generally good. It would easily slip into the back pocket of my jeans or the cargo pocket of fatigues, though the hooked finger rest on the magazine could make a fast draw turn into a Keystone Cops routine. It was accurate enough and reliable with round nosed Remington JHP loads.

I think you did well, ConcealedKalifornia. For $100, I would have bought it too.

$100 on anything that is reliable, and you can shoot well, is a win in my book. Hopefully it qualifies as both!

Yeah I am pretty happy it was the SAO model, as I have heard much more bad than good from that side.

The SAO model seems to be a little more varied (Which seems to be the trademark of AMT "AMT! Some people like us!") so im crossing my fingers. The only thing that worries me is it seems quite a lot of people are a bit afraid of carrying one in the chamber with the SAO, even when they have a totally reliable gun. Something about the safeties are a little sketchy? Anyone know of any truth to this?

I really don't know if I would ever carry this, but who knows.... so i figured id ask

My friends dad has pocket carried an AMT backup in .38 super for 20 years, its an awesome gun. I've always wanted a .45, they're the same frame/size as the .38 super. Thankfully they're hard to find and off roster since I read a lot of negatives about them re: reliability. I'd still be tempted to try one if I found one.

Did they feed you some BS about "by August the only semi-auto handgun on the roster will be a S&W"? You'd think a gun shop would know that everything currently on the roster can be renewed and that Ruger and S&W are the only two who are not renewing any handguns. I swear they're trying to create a panic to justify their high prices on most models.
