Not knowing the exact details, I would say there is no wrong answer. If you feel that the safest direction is downrange, then by all means it is. If he feels it is pointed down, then he's right too. There is no hard and fast rule for every situation, just that it is pointed in a safe direction. If you were in a spot where someone could walk between the muzzle and range then you were in the wrong, but it doesn't sound like that was the case.

Best judgement is key, blind adherence to rules like always muzzle up or down could be dangerous too.

So thanks everyone for taking it easy on me. Hopefully I will see him again and will ask this time what his thoughts are on the matter. After reading everyone's comments I believe I handled the firearm correctly and it may just be that he is being a little over cautious (which is perfectly acceptable).
