    I have a 9mm M & P. Can you put a 40 cal. barrel in a 9?

      Yep...if you're contemplating getting an M&P,make sure its a 40 so you can use a 9mm conversion barrel. Can't go from 9mm to 40

Make sure its a conversion barrel from 40 to 9 and not just a 9 barrel. Smith and wesson no longer sells slides due to people screwing up their guns because of this.

I bought the 40 and used a Storm Lake conversion 9mm barrel. Shoots flawlessly!

This. You can get one on MidwayUSA. I picked one up with the melonite finish.

I guess I should stop using my m&p40 slide with s&w 9mm barrel, I mean 6,000 rounds + of 9mm and 1,200 of 40s&w something might be broken or wrong with my slide.

i've run my 40 with the stock 9 barrel that was in my friend's M&P (he upgraded the barrel in his) and haven't had/seen any issues. though i do shoot my CZ SP-01 way more than the M&P.

Same here. Bought the 40 pistol, the 9mm conversion barrel and a set of 9mm magazines. Shoots perfectly for both calibers.

Yeah, I have to agree. There isn't really a "conversion" barrel for these. S&W designed them so that you can drop any barrel in. The problem comes from the 9mm slide having a 9mm breach face that is too small to handle the larger cartridge base of the .40/.357 Sig rounds. The M&P 40s and the no-longer-in-production M&P 357s have a larger breach face that is still close enough to handle the 9mm rounds without a problem. As the others have noted, you get the .40/.357 versions, and the spare barrels to convert them. The 9mm version is only ever going to be a 9mm version. I mean, you might be able to send it in to S&W and have them officially "convert" it by swapping out the slide. Or you might be able to find a used slide. But short of that, you are stuck with 9mm, and whatever 9mm-based factory/wildcat round you can get barrels for.

Will the barrel swap also work with the m&p pro 5" barrel?? I have a 40 and would like to buy a 5" 9 mm barrel.
