Range Report: Springfield XD .40 S&W

I just got back from the range at discount gun mart. This is the second time I've taken my new Springfield XD to the range. Previously, it's only had 50 rounds through it, so it's just getting broken in.

This time, I was shooting some Winchester 165 grain ammo. I shot nine clips magazines into nine different targets @ 21 feet. I had some nice groupings, but I am a new shooter and not as consistent as I like to be. The targets I'm using help me figure out what I'm doing wrong, but if anybody has some suggestions or advice, I'd love to hear it.

In the attached photo, I started shooting at the target in the upper right corner first, and went right to left.

    In before the rest.

    Magazines not clips lol.

XD .40 was my first pistol. I have the service. Like it a lot and still use it as my go to gun for home defense. Also you are right handed? I am a lefty and those targets would need to be flipped for me.

XD40 was also my first pistol I purchase. Nice pistol. No problem at all.

Another whose first pistol was an XD-40. Absolutely love the thing, and it's pretty damn accurate. Shoots a lot better than a buddy's first run M&P 40. I typically run 180 gr through it.

Great gun, my tactical xd 40 was my first pistol. Close to 10,000 rounds now and it's never failed me, a lot of factory but most recently have been reloads.

I have an XD40 but it does not have a clip. Mine came with a couple magazines. Are you sure that it's an XD40?

Haha, yeah, I guess I watch too many movies. Fixed for accuracy.

Yep, I am right handed, but good question.

Glad to hear you guys enjoy your XD's. I got the Tactical version, it has been really fun to shoot.

The XD Service 40 was the first pistol that I bought for myself. I used my dad's 1911 45 and 38spl revolver before that.

You haven't even started to break it in. I don't keep close track of my round count. It is in the 30-40k range. I bought it in 2005 and got into doing pistol competitions a few years afterward. I have spent more on upgrades than what the original gun cost, but it was well worth it.

The triggers are horrible on some xd pistols and others are good enough to get decent groups. You should be able to drop the striker without the gun moving, when dry firing. Watch the sights for movement as you dry fire.

                  Some XD porn:

I have a barsto 9mm conversion barrel that was hand fit to the gun, but it doesn't extract 100% reliably. It has cost me some time in competitions, but it works well for plinking and practice. I reload a 155 grain lead semi wadcutter bullet over a light charge of hp-38 and get a load that feels soft at 1,000 fps. It is like shooting factory 9mm.

Haha, yeah, I've only put 140 rounds through it, definitely need more range time. I will check the trigger soon...I haven't noticed anything deficient, but being a new shooter, I could have easily overlooked it.

Your XD looks great. Did the slide come with the barrel? I really wanted a bi-tone, but couldn't get it in the .40.

I have a service XD that I sent in for hard chrome.
Better than the Bi-Tone because all the external metal is chromed.
I also did the match barrel upgrade by Springfield Customs.

I like the mag well on your XD.

I'll post pics of mine soon. It's sitting in the safe, never fired except by the factory. Too little time.....

My barrel is a Barsto brand. The slide is factory. The sights are Dawson Precision and they are set into a bomar cut which is machined into the slide. The slide stop lever and magwell are from pistol gear. My gunsmith did the extended mag release and the 3.25 pound trigger. Total movement is 3/16" or so from rest to over travel. The trigger is amazing for a polymer gun. He used a parts kit and then fine tuned it. Dave from Dave's metal works, in Covina, Ca is who I used for this gun.

I think the bitone slide is better than the black coated version, since it is solid stainless, but my controls are stock black finish, or used to be. I have worn the finish off a lot of small parts from use and cleaning. I have seen some with hard chrome on the slide and small parts and they looked good. I don't have a problem with rust on the small parts, but I use it a couple times per month and clean and oil it at least every few months. Hard chrome is a good option, if you have a non stainless slide and want it to look like stainless.

The slide has very slight marks from my bladetech holster. I don't know if a black finish would be harmed or not. My mom and my brother both have XD black pistols, but they haven't used them as much as mine. My mom has an XD service 9mm with a Cmore red dot that sits on a carver mount. My brother has the XD Tactical 40 and it is still stock, other than grip tape. I put the grip tape on mine recently, and I like it. I have shot stippled xd pistols, but I wasn't eager to stipple mine and be stuck with the job, whether it came out good or bad.

I am a big fan of stainless and the hard chrome look. All of the firearms that I purchased new, have stainless on them. The all black pistols and rifles are boring. My AR 15 is all black, but I bought it used and customized it and am too cheap to pay to paint it.

Love my xd service. It was my first gun and I bought it in 2002. After the first 21k rounds I sent her in for a rebuild, trigger job, night sights, and hard chrome. 10k later it is still my favorite gun to shoot. Very reliable and super accurate. I have had a total of 6 ftfs in its entire life span. I have now stopped keeping track of rounds but this is my go to gun. Have fun op and keep practicing!

Thanks! Headed to the range later tonight, hoping to do better this time around. Glad to hear field reports about the reliability and quality of the XD. A hard chrome finish, trigger job and a match barrel may happen in the next 10K rounds. Either that or SSE an XDm.
