    question about pistol...

I just finished a transfer on a pistol and wanted to lock the case. Maybe i'm not allowed to lock the pistol case... but, can i lock the pistol with a lock? I dont trust them at all there for some reason. knowing it's a used pistol, they can go out and shoot that pistol all day.

Why shouldn't you be able to lock the pistol? It's yours.

I'm just asking because i'm thinking about going back there and putting a lock on the gun...

Am i not allowed to lock the case that the pistol is in? They said "no"

Also, I have a gun cab. at home thats approved by the DOJ and I have a bunch of gun locks laying around. Some that arent even open. They say I need a reciept for them or i cant pick up the gun. Why in the world do i need to buy another lock if i've got 50 new ones laying around at home? Is it another way to make money?

I don't know why they don't let you lock the gun or the case. I've done several PPTs and every one that I did, the FFL let me either lock the gun or the case. As for the locks, it's the law. Stupid, but you still have to follow it.

They said "they need it to be unlocked so they can see the serial number"
should i go back there and lock up the pistol with a pistol lock?

the reciept bull is a load of crap. I could have a reciept but how do they know i have the actual item. I could of sold it years ago. makes no sense what so ever.

The reciept has to be date stamped. I believe the lock's reciept has to show a date stamp within 90 days of the purchase/transfer of the pistol. You said you have an approved gun cabinet right, so what's the problem? Just fill out the sheet that they provide stating the make/model of the case and the serial numer. This will exempt you from needing to buy another gun lock. In the meantime I would def. head down there and put a lock on the gun if they won't let you lock the case. It's always better to be safe than sorry.

He said "it's a cabinet not a safe... it's now allowed" I told him It's DOJ approved man.. He said I need a reciept... I dont get their logic.

They close at 6 and it's 6:15... so I'll head there in the morning and put a lock on it.

I just had a thread regarding a safty device when picking up a new gun. Heres a link to the affidavit of owing a certified lockbox or safe.

This statement is straing from the CA DOJ website.

"Transfers of firearms to persons who demonstrate ownership of a qualifying gun safe. Ownership may be demonstrated by displaying to the firearms dealer: 1) A receipt indicating purchase of, or an affidavit, signed under penalty of perjury, stating that the purchaser owns a gun safe, and 2) An affidavit, signed under penalty of perjury, stating that the gun safe meets the standards set forth in DOJ regulations. "

But I guess that only applies to gun safes or lockboxes.

The FFL I'm dealing with just wants me to provide make and model.

I have heard some FFL will play with customer's guns.

Take the slide home with you. They don't need it for the 10 day wait.

Which FFL are you using? Want to make sure I don't go there.

i highly doubt they'll let me take the slide home. They'll give me some BS reason. I wish i could of just taken the mag's with me. There's 3 ten round mags. Is it to late to decide to take those mag's home with me?

Are you sure i'm allowed to take the slide home after they've started dros and holding time? I dont even know how to remove the slide yet on the pistol. It's an HK usp .40 compact. If anything I'll just put a lock on the pistol. If they say no to that I really dont know what to say to them.

About the safe... screw it. I'm just gonna have my dad sell me a new gun lock he has at his business and write me a reciept. I'm paying for it, i'm getting a reciept so I should be good. I'd rather give him my money anyways.

mike452... it's turners outdoors... I wonder if all turners are like this.

P.S. The person I purchased the pistol from posts on the boards here. He was great! Very smooth transaction. If he posts anything for sale I'll be sure to vouche for him. Thanks again!

Turners told me today that a gun cabinent with a key lock requires a receipt, don't know why, they said safes do not required a receipt but I would have to sign the above posted affadavit. Them trying to sell you the 20 dollar lock is them trying to get more money from you, not too mention all the other crap that they're going to try and sell you once you pickup the gun ...

The receipt for the gun lock needs to be within the last 30 days.

                            Because it is the law.

And they have 6 dollar locks.

And what is wrong with trying to sell you stuff when you pick up the gun? Jeezus, it is a business; you don't HAVE to buy a holster/ammunition/case, etc, but they will offer it to you and might show you a few different options...I mean, the nerve of a business trying to sell you stuff to go with your new purchase....HORRIFYING.

Also, the overall ignorance of basic gun laws/issues of some of the people who have posted on this thread is astonishing (not directed at you particularly US Citizen). But the people talking about "oh, the receipt needs to be from 90 days ago, wrong, 30 days; and why do I need a receipt for a gun cabinet? the LAW; and why can't I lock the case the gun is in? b/c the stores do gun counts and if there is some confusion, they might look at every gun in the back if there is a discrepancy and if they can't get into the case, they don't know WHAT is in there or if it is empty. These are just a few examples.

I know the laws are somewhat complex and change from time to time, but these are BASIC questions and giving the wrong answer, even when you say "you think" that is what it is, is detrimental and can cause frustration and/or breach of law.

should i put a lock on the gun or just leave it?
Does the lock need to be purchased through a "gun store' or does it not matter where you purchased it as long as you have a reciept
