First Time Out With Ruger LC9

I am not at all a pistolero. I am definitely a rifle guy and shoot them fairly regularly.
I bought an LC9 with the intention of getting a CCW here in San Bernardino County.
So this is actually my first handgun and the second in our family.
Accuracy - Even with my lousy eyes and poor pistol mechanics I was really surprised that almost all my shots went into the bull of the target from a rest at 7 yards. I used a 6 o'clock hold and my shots mostly landed in the black. Wow. Again aside from being a pretty noob pistols shooter I like that the sights were on out right of the box.

Sights - The basic 3 whites dots were adequate but the front seemed very narrow in the rear sights. I was in shade looking into sun and had a hard time picking them up.

Trigger - The long take up is well known in the LC9 but I got used to it. It seemed similar to my milsurp rifles. It did seem smooth out pretty quick though unless I just acclimated quick. I don't know if loosening up in less than 50 rounds is good or not. I'd like to hear from anyone who has used the Galloway trigger kit to shorten the pull of the trigger.

Feeding/Ejecting - I used 50 rounds of CCI Blazer 115 gr. FMJ and 50 of Winchester SZX9 training ammo. No FTf/FTE. I loaded up 7+1. The Blazer stuff seem to be a little more accurate as long as I did my job but not significantly so.
As far as ejecting, hmmm...At first the brass cases of the Winchester were ejecting at 3 o'clock. As I got toward the end they were ejecting more toward the 5 o'clock position. Breaking in? Hotter barrel?
The aluminum Blazer cases were also at 3 o'clock and then went to mostly 11 o'clock with occasional 3 o'clock. Thinking about it now, these may have been the last round out when the slide holds open. Interesting how with very little break in the ejection pattern changed. Maybe someone with more pistol experience can fill me in. (This would be just about anybody)
Over all I like it a lot. Reliable after 100 rounds of brass and aluminum and consistently on target out of the box.
Any comments and suggestions appreciated especially with some vision correction help while shooting.

If you are planning to use it for CCW then do not at all modify the gun specially the trigger, keep it stock. adding a laser sight is ok but not modifying the internals, the gun is reliable enough to just leave it as it is.

What is your reason to not modify (just curious)

it can be a legal issue that can bite you in the butt if you actually were forced to shoot someone in self defense,(modified trigger contributed to negligent discharge) same reason it is recommended to use factory ammo when you carry it, a case can't be made against you that your were using "hot" killer ammo.

Well then trigger mod is out. I'll work out something for sights.

I have an LC9 and found mine to be surprisingly accurate as well. I suggest giving the sights a little more time - as they may work out better for you after trying them on various ranges in different lighting. Personally, I like how the front "dot" is a tiny bit larger to better line up with the dots on the rear sight.

As far as the trigger goes, I use my LC9 as a defensive weapon and the long trigger (to me) is a bit of a safety feature in that I'm not a "gunfighter" and wouldn't want my nervousness during a confrontation to cause me to accidentally fire..

              Just keep shooting it...

Other than removing the mag disconnect safety, I roll my Ruger stock, warm it up with a box of rounds about once a month to keep the muscle memory.

If you do your part, the LC9 will be consistent and reliable.

              Cheers!

I'm also surprised at how well I shoot my LC9, leaves me feeling very confident in the gun.

Best to ask your lawyer what you should do rather than input from people. I know what mine said and my EDC weapons are stock and ammo is the same that LE uses in my county.

You will get a bunch of true/not true, he said/she said but in the end, it will be you potentially standing before a jury, so do your homework.

Just my .02 and this in not legal or professional advise, just my personal opinion.

You should keep it stock if you are going to use it for carry purpose.

Masaad Ayoob is probably one of the most respected authorities as far a CCw and the legal aspects go..Look up his youtube video about modifying CCW pistols before you remove or modify anything (besides sights) on a carry pistol..

Mass has had that same speach since 1970

I don't ever seem to recall a good shoot being made bad by a mod.

In the event of an ND, mods might be more likely to lead to prosecution if don't incorrectly and they created a safety issue.

If you aim and hit someone where intended, how does a mod make it a bad shoot?

Any Case law or ciminal law that that supports the legal liability?

And yes carring the same ammo as your local LEO is issued makes sense to me.
Rule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED

Rule 2 -NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY (including your hands and legs)

Rule 3 -KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET

Rule 4 -BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT
                            (thanks to Jeff Cooper)

Sure is a lot of legal advice being given by non-lawyers on this forum.

OP, congrats on the LC9. I just attended a CCW course and quite a few of the students were qualifying with LC9s and doing very well. Good pistol. I sure wish that I had picked one up before it dropped off the roster.
