Picatinny Challenged

I was looking at a whole slew of modern pistols at the LGS and noticed that most of them had little rails underneath, sort of like extra chins on an older relative. These were stocked for the CCW crowd (the only crowd there is these days in CA)and it got me thinking why?

When I was with the SO I went from a Detective Special to a Centennial only because the Centennial had less to snag on clothing when going onto action. In my mind it was worth giving up the extra cartridge of the Colt (OK this is highly subjective, but you get the idea.) I cannot understand the necessity of walking around with an on board flashlight on a concealed pistol, nor wanting an unflashlight encumbered concealed pistol with "teeth" underneath.
Am I missing something here?

Doesn't have to be a flashlight. Could be a laser, which makes some of the smaller pistols easier to aim since the sights can be awful

Issuing CCWs is apparently what's hot in my county right now. I don't know about yours.

also it is cool to have something called "picatinny"

It's been done before---the Elgin Cutlass Pistol. The concept didn't go over so good then and it's just silly now. And the Elgin Cutlass Pistol looked waaay cooler.

I understand that this is a bash the gun with a rail thread, but let me interject some reality here. Just because you carry a gun, doesn't mean you have to have a light, or other accessory, on it at all times. You could carry it without the light and then put the light on it for a bedside table gun at home.
