    Uberti SAA Question

This is my first revelover and I wanted to play with an SAA. I have an EMF by Uberti with 7.5" barrel in 45lc. I went to shoot it for the first time yesterday using 45lc from Turners (forgot the brand and I'm not near it now). It was $35/box of 50. The ammo seemed to jam the cylinder. I had to putz with it for some time to relieve the jam.

After I sorted some rounds (by fitting one-by-one) that seemed not to protrude back too far, I loaded six and it shot very well. Then I stopped. That wheel was pretty jammed with the first six. Rounds seemed to stick out the back of the cyclinder too far. Anybody experience this with factory ammo in a Uberti SAA?? Any recommended brands of ammo for this gun besides the $2/round stuff?

I experienced a similar issue with my Ruger Vaquero. The distance from the back of the cylinder to the front of the recoil shield is a bit more narrow/thinner than most.
When I tried to use Blazer .45LC aluminum cased ammo with the JHP, the cylinder would bind up. On closer inspection, I saw that the case rim thickness uniformity was terrible. I could see that some rims were much thicker than others and it was that rim thickness that was binding the cylinder.
Oddly enough, I had an old box of Winchester ammo (white box with the red, orange and white banner) that also had issues due to the case rim thickness.

Try some of the 'cowboy'-specific ammo - for example: Black Hills, Magtech, Winchester, etc. and see if you still have that issue.
Those all work perfectly in my Vaquero and have very consistent brass.

    Good luck!

I think that's what I'm seeing as well. Thanks!

I had that happen with some factory .38 special. It was PMC 130-something grain round nose fmj in an 1872 Open Top. I had fired CCI Blazer brass & my reloads which both had flat round nose profiles.

Jeez, $35/50 and it jams like this? Ridiculous! Bring the unused rounds back to the store and get a refund!

Agreed, but good luck with that - Turners. This is the stuff:

It's in a different box. Not called "Bear Load". It's from Turners. 250g, flat point, unjacketed.

I shoot the same SHM 45 Colt ammo outta my Cimmeron Frontier (Prietta made) and it functions perfectly. Mine sometimes locks up with my handloads when I get sloppy with my primer seating.

My Ubertis all run great with factory ammo. Like Ramcharger, the only time I have a lock-up is with a reload with a high primer. I now QC all my reloads to eliminate the odd high primer rounds.

Have you also checked the front of the cylinder with those loads?
They may be a bit long and could be binding on the forcing cone, too...
And, if those loads are not crimped well enough and are close to +P loads like those in the link you provided, the bullets may be jumping forward, too.
                  Worth a check...

Just 'bite the bullet' and get some 'regular' 45 Colt ammo from Winchester, Magtech, Black Hills, etc.
Avoiding the aluminum or steel cased stuff...

No one has mentioned it yet but try running a cylinder brush and some solvent through the cylinder bores. There could be something leftover from factory test firing thats not letting the cartridges drop all the way in. Mine do this on occasion when they get a bit dirty. I'll have to press the round all the way down so the cyl can rotate.
