Possible problem with my p229

Yesterday I went shooting with my family and my sisters boyfriend from Scotland, as it was everyone's first time shooting I brought along my entire arsenal . We started with a quick safety lesson from the RSO at the range about the range rules and what not, then I followed up by trying to teach them how to handle firearms safely. Everyone was having fun "safely" but when my sisters boyfriend was shooting my p229 he said that it did not fire when he pulled the trigger, I told him to lay the pistol down on the table, I saw that there was not a visible malfunction (no FTEs) which worried me a little. So I dropped the mag and locked the slide back, when I did this a live round came out of the chamber, I inspected the bullet and it looked like it had not been struck by the firing pin. I loaded the bullet back into the magazine and chambered the round again and fired the remaining rounds left in the mag. So since this was the first time this pistol has been fired since I bought it I'm a little concerned that there may be something wrong with my gun. My sisters boyfriend says the trigger wouldn't work at all when he pulled it and I was behind him watching him shoot so I saw him fire a few rounds before he told me the gun isn't firing and also it worked flawlessly for about 30-40 rounds after that happened. So now it seems like the best thing for me to do is buy 500rds and go back to the range and see if I need to call the manufacturer to fix it, which I really don't want to do.

Most likely user error. I would go put a couple hundred more through it and see if you can duplicate the problem he claimed. He may have just short stroked the trigger.

I tend to agree, unless there is a manufacturing defect, this design has been around a long time now.

He short stroked it. Did not release the trigger far enough forward to the reset point before pulling again.

Do you have an short reset in the 229?

It sound like the slide was not completely forward during that one round. Possible user error.
If the slide was not completely forward, the firing pin would not make contact with the primer. You can still pull the trigger, but not nothing will happen.

Is the Sig DA/SA or DAK? If it is DAK, as mentioned above he probably just didn't reset the trigger. If it was DA/SA, did the hammer drop on the round that didn't fire? My wife had trouble yesterday with my USP because she wasn't letting the trigger reset.

I think you all are right I'll have to question him some more about that, I don't have a short reset trigger on the pistol, and I do plan on putting a case of ammo through the pistol before I call Sig unless something catastrophic happens.

Agree with others on user error on the part of your sisters boyfriend.

Am I reading this correct? The pistols first outing was handled by somebody other than you?

I was the first person to shoot to show how to operate the gun and worked flawlessly then I loaded a magazine for him to shoot and that's when it happened.

It seems, like others have stated, that he short stroked the trigger or he may have accidentally decocked it while pulling the trigger. Did you happen to check to see if the hammer was half cocked or fallen on the slide?

No at the time I thought it was a failure to fire and the primer had been struck.

I had a couple of issues with my p239 in the first couple of magazines I had one stove pipe and one failure to fire. I've put over a thousand rounds in it since with no issues.

It doesn't take much. If the slide was about 1/16 not completely forward at the moment he pulled the trigger, this will happen.

Anyway, don't worry too much about it. Except for that moment everything seem fine.
