About the 4506

I'm interested in picking one up, but I see they've fallen off the roster. Can I still A. Buy one from a private party (w/ transfer through a FFL) or B.buy one from a shop (surely they're allowed to clear out their inventory..right?)

Also, is the 4506-1 that much of an improvement over the original?

Smith & Wesson quit making the 4506-1 in 1999.

So you need to find one on consignment or from a private party.

There are other models that you may want to consider such as the 645,4513,4516,4526,4526,4536,4546,4553,4556,4566,4 576,4583,4586 and the 4596.

There is also the 745 and 845 the predecessors to the Performance Center 945.

Some are full size and some are compacts. There are all heavy well built guns both in single and double action configurations. You can wiki all the possibilities and find out why S&W made some really excellent guns.

Good guns, 4506 and 4516-1 are all stainless steel and so are a bit on the heavy side. They are both very comfortable shooting guns, accurate and trouble free. They made a lot of these guns so you should be able to locate one in the near term.

The Smith & Wesson Model 4506-1: Was a later, modified version of the 4506. Change to the slide manufacturing process. Trigger guard changed from square to round. Much later, the hammer and trigger were changed to being blued instead of receiving a flash chrome finish, and the S&W roll marks were dropped in favor of laser etching.
