    Off Roster transfer within CA

I've heard conflicting answers to this one...

I'd like to purchase an off-roster handgun that that's being sold on GunBroker. The seller is in Calif, but it'd be a 5 hour drive from where I live, so I'm hoping it can be sent to our local FFL for the transfer, rather than my having to make two trips to get this done at the seller's end.

I've been told, if the gun is being sold by a dealer, I'd have to go to his shop to fill out the DOJ paperwork and return in 10 days to pick it up.

I've also been told, if the gun is being sold by a private party, the seller can take it to his local FFL, have it shipped to my local FFL, and upon its arrival, I can go to my local FFL, fill out the DOJ paperwork and pick up the gun after the 10 day wait, thus avoiding the two long drives.

Are these true statements? And if not, what's the actual process required for purchasing an off-list handgun within CA?

Either the dealer or the seller can ship it to your local FFL but since you guys aren't face to face you will need to do an SSE transfer since its off roster. Might be cheaper to offer the seller an extra $100-150 for his time to make the drive to your FFL (depending on what your FFL charges for SSE).

Must be FTF, face to face. If you really want it, travel 5hrs to start DROS, then another 5hrs 10 days later to pick it up. That's 20 hrs travel time. Good luck. SSE (Single shot exemption) is the only other way to buy an off roster handgun, you'll have to ask your FFL if they perform that service.

These are the ways of transferring provided the seller does not qualify for an intrafamilial transfer.

        1. You meet up face to face and do a private party transfer. (read the Calguns wiki on the rules).
        2. He ships the gun to a local FFL who accepts shipments from private parties (or he has his FFL ship to your FFL) and ALSO does single shot exemptions.
        3. He has the gun converted to single shot exempt form before shipping it to your local FFL who must be okay with transferring exempt firearms. While it's perfectly legal, some shops choose not to for whatever reasons.

        These are your only options.

If it's shipped, then it needs to be on the Roster of Handguns Certified for Sale or be exempt from it.

Thanks for the all that info.

                Sounds like I should find a S&W 617 that's closer to home.
