Build A 1911?

Just received the Brownells 1911 catalog and it crossed my mind that I may want to build a 1911 some day. Is it even possible to have a bare receiver sent to a FFL in CA and then DROS'd?

Do the 80% regulations apply to handguns as well as long guns if I were able to go that way?

Pretty much the only way to buy frames is through PPT.

If you build up an 80%, you should build it into an exempt format gun and then convert it back, much like an AR/AK pistol.

1911's are not tinkertoys like AR's. Parts will require fitting and a sorts Of expertise. It takes gunsmiths years to become competent working on 1911's and there are some that specialize and do nothing but.

For comparison, becoming a glock armorer takes one six hour class and a $1.57 tool. Becoming a master glock armorer takes one six hour class and a $1.57 tool.

Just buy a good 1911. Guarantee you'll spend less and have far better results.

Have several already and am quite aware of many of the intricacies involved. Actually, I've been thinking of attending Cylinder & Slides' course for quite awhile now. I'm not sure if the kit they provide is Ca Legal though, I'll have to clarify that.

I really wouldn't call an AR a Tinkertoy either.......next thing you know you will need a safety card to enter Toys R' Us.

The easiest way to do it without jumping through hoops is to build off a basic gun like a Springfield GI. You can strip down to bare frame and slide, and then sell the parts you don't want. I helped a friend build his Essex frame and slide from the takeoffs of my GI.
