When is Background Check Run after purchasing handgun?

    Hey!
Just been looking all over and I can't seem to find an answer to this question, so I figured it was time to register to thos great forum.

So, I just purchased my first handgun, and my question, do dealers run the background check usually immediately that day?

    Thanks!

    Safe shooting!

The Feds do their background check at some point during your 10 day wait.

The dealer does not perform the check - they merely transmit the form

    Why do you ask?

This is my first firearm and ive been reading different things, such as, there's an instant check FFLs can do, or that there's one that takes thirty days, etc. and I'm confused. Its been three days since I purchased it, so I pick it up a week from today, and just one of those questions going through my mind during the long wait.

I think the background check is done on the same day, in free states you get to go home with your newly purchased gun. California makes us wait 10 days, which makes absolutely no sense when you already own other firearms.

Usually within 24 hours. Sometimes before youcan get home from a ppt sale the ffl calls and says come immediatly to pick up your firearm the buyer failed dros . Happened to me at Island View in Ventura. I drove back next morning picked firearm up and went to beach to surf fish. Not a wasted trip.

            Couldn't agree more man.
Is there any rule of thumb? Like, it's safe to assume after x- Amount of days that background has been done.
I looked all over the internet and there were no answers for this, so I hope this will help other people with the same question in the future.

The 10 day check is to long. but a short period of wait should be in effect so in heat of passion you cannot go buy a gun and shoot your ex. At least an instant background check. And the statement above should be (as long as you already are allowed to own firearms).

I was going to say right after they get your money.
They put it on the computer, which I think then goes to the state DOJ, and I don't know if they go in immediately, or only during business hours, or only after they 'batch them in' or what.
All I know, I go back in 10 days and get my gun. No big deal. Total nonsense, but ain't no pain to it. It's not like falling on a prickly pear cactus or anything.

They were pumping my info right into the computer last time I did it. I imagine they processed it right then, but what do I know?

I don't know when they actually do it. I will say that in other states, you do the paperwork, they make a phone call (and maybe fax your docs) and after a few minutes you walk out with your gun.

I wish politicians would start using logic. I don't have to wait 10 days to buy other potentially dangerous stuff....hammers, screwdrivers, knives, dynamite, etc. I know this is California, and logic stops at the border, but.....really?

As someone else mentioned....I guess I can almost understand the 10 day wait for your FIRST gun, but what's point on every gun. If I already own guns, why not just let me buy it and go on?

I once saw a movie where only the police and military had guns.

                    It was called Schindler's List.

See what I mean? No real rule of thumb other then assuming they run it after you give them the dough.

Thanks though, I think its safe to say that bells and whistles almost immediately go off if the wrong guy tries to purchase, and that the ten day wait makes no sense at all.

How often does that happen in states where you can get your firearm right away?

What if it was your ex that is out to get you and you need something to protect yourself with. Hopefully nothing happens for the next 10 days?

You better have a kitchen knife handy. Or go pick up some throwing knives, mace, etc.
