    Looking for .357

I'm looking to get a a revolver. My first experience was with a Rossi 357 I had bought for the wife(shooting .38) and neither of us liked it. I'm looking to spend 500$ max or trade an SU16. I think S&W is out of that range.I was thinking of Ruger Sp101 or GP100 or Taurus non ported. A mid length barrel between 3-4 inches would be great.I'm using it to get comfortable shooting revolvers so later I might get a snubbie and mid length would be easier for the wife in HD.
So is my quest a realistic one in that price range and are there other options.I have the semi thing covered just trying to diversify.
    Thanks

I have a 4" Taurus Trakker (I know you said non-ported). It's a pretty soft shooter, 7-shot, and has a great trigger. I like the trigger much more than the S&W 586 I recently sold. Very easy to shoot double action. I think I paid $450 used.

Cant go wrong with a Ruger SP101 3" barrel. Great compromise between weight and size. Small enough to easily carry, yet enough weight to handle .357Mag loads. I have one and love it for these reasons. Its the only Ruger revolver I own. Im a Smith kinda guy, but they didn't have anything like the SP101.

I will say shooting .38spl out of the SP101 you can do all day. It can handle .357s, but Its not easy on the hands. I will deff only be using .357's for defense loads. Its quite a handful. Not that it isnt fun

I have the Ruger GP100 in 4". I really like it. It is a tank and it will handle it all. I would recommend it over the SP101 unless you plan to carry.

Yes. GP100 in 4" or 6" is hard to beat.

Go for the ruger, GP 100 with a 4 inch barrel is a nice shooter. I have a taurus and it has the worst trigger.

Is there any reason to limit yourself to new guns??? Become conversant with the used revolver check list and you can easily find a Smith and Wesson in your $500 price range.

About two months ago, I found this Model 66-2 for $350 plus Dros at a local gun store:

A couple of years ago I found this Model 66 no dash for $300:

Six months ago, I got this Colt Trooper ( I know, not a Smith) for $600 in a Private Party deal from an estate. A bit more than your $500 limit, but certainly if you can come up with five bills you can usually stretch it a bit.

My secret is simple: I check out the local stores often and I don't wait to get an opinion from internet forums as to whether a gun is a good deal or not. Do your homework before you start looking and know if a gun is priced right. Then buy it without going home to think about it. Sure as heck, if you hesitate, the next person to come along will buy it out from under you.

+1 on the used market, can usually get a really nice gun for way under market value. I just picked up a Ruger Security Six that looks like it had never been out of the safe for under $400, no tax.

Yeeup. I scored a REAL nice Dan Wesson 4" .357 a few months ago for three hundred bucks. They're out there for your price!

My Rossi 357 is a keeper. But hey, don't buy Sony if you want RCA.

Great advice. Used revolvers tend to be undervalued. Everyone wants a plastic tactic. Colts and S&Ws have a bit of a collector following. Ruger's not so much.
