Either way the GP-100 I'm thinking about definitely isn't on the roster :-( so I'd need to SA convert it. The only shop I know of that did it was Valkyrie Arms before they shutdown.

There are million variants of 627. Chances are the particular model you want is not on the roster.

The primary condition for SAE (not SSE) is barrel length of 4"+. That cannot be fudged due to the design of revolvers.

SSE is not the same as converting to SA. SSE is Single Shot Exemption.

Quite possible - I was typing from memory when I got Chiappa Rhino and know that 2" was a no-go, while 4" was all good. Clearly it's possible that the limit is 3".

Just remember to call your FFL and make sure that they can do the model you're looking to do. SAE is a bit more complex than SSE and not everyone will do it.

Single-action revolver exemption requires all of the following:
1. ammo capacity 5 or more rounds.
2. barrel length of 3" or greater
3. overall length of 7.5" or greater

(a) Article 4 (commencing with Section 31900) and Article 5 (commencing with Section 32000) shall not apply to a single-action revolver that has at least a five-cartridge capacity with a barrel length of not less than three inches, and meets any of the following specifications:
(1) Was originally manufactured prior to 1900 and is a curio or relic, as defined in Section 478.11 of Title 27 of the Code of Federal Regulations.
(2) Has an overall length measured parallel to the barrel of at least seven and one-half inches when the handle, frame or receiver, and barrel are assembled.
(3) Has an overall length measured parallel to the barrel of at least seven and one-half inches when the handle, frame or receiver, and barrel are assembled and that is currently approved for importation into the United States pursuant to the provisions of paragraph (3) of subsection (d) of Section 925 of Title 18 of the United States Code.

I am unclear if the Gp100 action is simply/readily modifiable for single action revolver configuration.

With S&W wheelguns removal of DA sear does the job.
