Hydro-dipping

Hello Everyone!
Been awhile since I have posted anything but I have been doing my best to at least read up on what everyone is up to. Good to see most of you are doing well.
On to the matter at hand, I found a company that retails at home hydro-dipping kits (water transfer painting) and I was wondering if any one has had any experience with them. According to the site the water transfer works on a variety of materials and I was considering dolling up my M&P .40 with a fresh coat of color. Has anyone tried these? How did it turn out? Durability? Advice on prep and where I would need to tape off to protect sensitive working areas?

I must say, that camo dipped Glock looks pretty freakin' awesome. The MyDipKit website doesn't have a section with instructions or best practices? The kits MUST come with some directions, right???

Looked into it a while back and the guys with videos on youtube made it look super easy. I never did decide to give it a try, but I figured the best approach would have been to start on cheap/simple to dip items and work my way up.

How will it handle holster wear?

That is one of my questions. They get clear coated and I would assume that if you are using a Serpa holster or other non leather holster it may fair ok. I was hoping someone may have experience though. There are a lot of different patterns available from that vendor and even more from others. I plan on getting A-Tacs FG for my Mini-30 from TWN as soon as I get some bank roll saved up.

I guessing your mini-30 should be fine as long as you are meticulous in your prep work. Plenty of camo shotguns/rifles being sold by manufacturers using what I am guessing is the same method. Holster wear may be another issue altogether. Wouldn't hurt to check the youtube vids for comments, someone may have already asked questions on wear as well as for pointers on how to.

Saw an episode of "how it's made" or one of those shows, where they were dipping bows using this method. It was very cool, and they indicated it was quite durable.

Thanks for the link. I think I will have to order some and practice on something unimportant before I feel confident enough to dip one of my pistols.

there is a shop that does hydro-dipping near me and i went in there and was chatting up the owner for a little while, nice guy.

He did say that the pattern is a little thin and can wear if not coated after the application. He says for things that may wear he has to coat over the pattern, either flat, semi-flat, or gloss clear coat in most cases. He had some rifle stocks there but they seemed kinda slick to me FWIW.

he also mentioned that he has to apply a base coat of paint first. It is the under layer, probably the tan in the glock pictured above. Then the pattern is applied and the print adheres to the paint.

Its all prep. If you dont prep right the film wont stick. They say its film paint but its actually rattlecan before film dip. Basically a fancy rattle can paint job.

I have used it to dip some parts in Multicam and fake carbon fiber.

In my experience, you do have to use some sort of paint as a base coat, Krylon is probably the best choice for this or some sort of self-etching primer. I tried to use the film on Cerakoted parts and it didn't stick very well.

I haven't had a chance to try dipping parts with a Krylon painted surface. Rinsing it in water afterwards takes the longest. I've literally stood at the kitchen sink for a good 15 min holding my parts under the water so that the surface isn't slippery or shiny anymore.

I let most of the parts I dipped dry for an entire day to make sure it fully set. It hasn't been very durable so far and I can scrub it off with my fingers. Granted, I believe this is due to me not prepping the surface enough with the proper paint.

It's just easier to Cerakote everything and use stencils lol :P

BTW: If you are going to get the materials, just get it from TWN Industries directly.
