1911 22LR / 45 combo ?

[warning: noob. I searched the forum and didn't find an obvious answer so here we go...]

With the current state of things (2A, list, microstamp, ...) I'm seriously considering buying a 1911, primarily for plinking for now. As I'm a total noob to handguns, I figured a combination 45 & 22 would be the way to go? Something like a RIA XT 22/45, but that isn't on the list so I can't get one. :-(

I've been looking around for other manufacturers that currently make a combination 22 & 45 1911 that I can buy in CA but I'm coming up empty. Am I missing something obvious? For the inevitable "how much?" question, figure under $1K; maybe a bit more.

My assumption in looking for a combination from the manufacturer is that the fit of both slides will be reasonable. Am I likely to have just as good a fit (for something not custom) if I buy a 45 and an Advantage Arms or Kimber conversion kit?

A 1911 in .45 with a Kimber .22 kit is a great combo.
With so many makers, 1911 frames do vary a bit, however, the .22 kit makers take that into consideration.
You should be able to easily have the needed accuracy for plinking, there are higher-cost .22 kits that can provide bulls eye style accuracy.

Sounds like you're aware that the .22LR Conversion Kit itself is not considered a 'firearm', so the purchase does not go thru an FFL and can be shipped directly to you.

Having said that.... While I am a fan of .22LR conversion kits and own several (research the Kimber thoroughly before purchase), I've become a bigger fan of 'dedicated' .22LR handguns
(mo is betta, 2 can shoot at once, fun collecting, .etc).

Personally, I would blow your budget on the 1911 itself, knowing that when you go quality... especially used... you're not going to lose money if/when you resell it.
This 'on roster' Springfield Loaded would be a solid choice, new or used.

Then I'd take some time on the .22LR decision (.22LR ammo is a pain in the arse to find at a decent price now anyway):
Evaluate Kits vs Dedicated, trying several before purchase. Here would be my recommendations to check out:

1) Ruger 22/45. Same feel and grip angle as a 1911, same fire control locations (manual safeties, magazine releases and bolt hold-opens).

2) S&W Model 41. Premiere target pistol, same grip angle as the 1911. As Hickok45 says... a 'no-excuses' gun. Does it get any better than this?

Yes, I learned a few things building an AR. Note the engraving used as my avatar. I'm really pleased with how that came out!

Personally, I would blow your budget on the 1911 itself...

...and I've thought of doing just that. I'm leaning toward spending a bit less figuring that I'll learn about what I like and what I don't as (and if) I develop some skill. ?? Besides, then I'll have something to put on future Christmas lists.

RIA Tactical can be gotten $525ish to $550. Watch the market place and you might even get extra magazines or ammo. $325 OTD for a Kimber 22 Conv kit incl tax and a second mag is feasible. On the high side that's $875 leaving you a budget for ammo and magazines.

BTW that is my bug out bag set up.
