    Noob question - carbon stains?

    Hi all,

This is a new S&W, are these just carbon stains from the manufacturer test firing?

    Thanks for humoring me

That is the color case hardening that S&W does to the trigger and hammer on their revolvers. My no dash 586 (pre mim) has the same coloring.

No and no. In 1997 S&W changed to a frame mounted firing pin, MIM hammer & trigger.

The black coating looks like that with some wear. I'm really surprised S&W hasn't done anything about that...

How can you guys tell? Below is a picture of my 686 Pro Series SSR which was advertised by S&W as having a forged trigger and hammer. Looks the same to me as the OP's trigger. Please enlighten me.

??? My 586 was made in 1986, it has a hammer mounted firing pin, and the hammer and trigger are color case hardened. Current production S&W revolvers still have the color case hardened triggers and hammers (it just looks a little different on MIM parts).

                  That's because 1986 came before 1997

That's news to me... looked at the catalog & they look black coated...
