It's a bit rough, but many people collect these now.

I'd put it at somewhere between $1000 and $1500.

It appears to possibly be from 1934 according to Colt's serial number look-up and some of the early features.

You might want to PM our resident collectible 1911 expert beetle and get his opinion on value if somehow (doubtful) he misses this thread

I think you may be surprised at it's value.

That is a nice one! Pre-War Colt Super 38. Pre-War Colts typically have exceptional workmanship and are highly desired on the collector market.

The blue book of gun values lists the gun per the following schedule

                    98% - $6000
                    95% - $5750
                    90% - $3500
                    80% - $2250
                    70% - $1700

I find the blue book to be on the low side of the current market. A Pre-War Colt Super 38 in slightly better condition to the one posted sold last year at Rock Island Auction for $6500. The auction house rated it 98%, but it did have a very slight takedown scratch.

I'd say the one posted is down a few % points in terms of condition. The takedown scratch on the slide and frame (even though it is light) will bring value down. If I were to guess what it might bring at auction I would say about $5500-$6000. All prices are assuming the parts are correct and original.

Still a very valuable and highly collectible gun!

Thanks for sharing it and good luck to you and your friend.

by the way I'm not an expert, just a enthusiast who spends too much time and money on 1911s

Remember that the auction house charges the seller and the buyer each a 20% fee
