First handgun purchase

My goal is to one day purchase a Glock 23 or Smith and Wesson M&P 40c.

In the meantime, I live in a condo and my neighbors on both sides of me have had their places broken into. One neighbor is a 90 year old woman who they broke in while she was sleep at 4am. That is scary as heck that they went through the trouble of ripping off her security bars on the window and bold enough to do it while people are home.

So I need some immediate protection for me and my daughter. Right now I have a budget of $300. Yes I know not a lot but I am hoping someone can recommend a .40 or 9mm semi auto that I can get new in that price range. I don't need fancy right now. I need effective. There are so many affordable options that just are not on the California list. So any suggestions would be awesome.

On a budget of $300 most people would suggest a good ol' classic pump action 12 gauge. Right now, Turner's has Mossberg's pistol grip Persuader for just under $330. That paired with a bulk pack of 12g from Walmart for $20 is very hard to beat for home defense purposes.

If you are set on a handgun though, your choices are a bit more limited. There have been Hi-Points 9mm under the $300 line I'm pretty sure. Maybe even under $200, plus your Handgun Safety Certificate cost of $25 and associated DROS charges.

I am in Sacramento. I have experience with shotguns but I am looking for something a bit less bulky. So I am set on handgun.

There are very few handgun options under $300, and even fewer good ones. Why do you insist on new? I'd prefer a used Glock or XD over any new sub $300 handgun.

Well I am flexible on the new part. I was just hoping to get new. But now the reality is setting in that my desire is a bit unreasonable. I am searching for police trade ins online right now.

Sorry to hear about your situation. For new, if you increased your budget to $500 then that opens up a lot more pistols for you.

If you're looking for used, J&G Sales (http://www.jgsales.com/featured_products.php) is currently offering a Berretta92 (9mm) for $329 and a Glock 23 (.40) for $329. That might be an option that could work for you. You would have to pay for the transfer, dros, and tax which would put you up around $400. But it could be a good option for you.

Sig SP2022s are an example of the cheapest priced quality handgun I would go for new, and they run $500. They're used all day long at $400. Glocks, XDs can also be found in that range. You definitely don't want a new gun under $300, they're pieces of crap. And if you're trusting you and your daughter's lives to it, piece of crap is not what you want.

why fixated on semi-auto ? my SHTF goto gun is a nice reliable single action revolver, bet you could get a revolver in your price range, even double action if that is what you prefer.

For your price and need. Some with say otherwise, but again for your cash and need, a s&w sigma would be just over $300. Depending where you find one. They don't make them no more I believe. The SD line replaced it and not sure if the price is much more. I have own one in .40 and had no complaints. Trigger is a heavy pull, but not as bad as someone might say and again if its for defense its good. I'm sure a lot of "owners" of one would say the same.

Get your HSC and have a friend or family member loan you a pistol until you can save up more for a decent, reliable handgun.
