    Rossi ranch hand question.

I know its "generally" illegal to change a rifle into a handgun, but is it legal to change a handgun into a shoulder fired handgun? By that i mean if a rifle stock is added to the ranch hand will that make it illegal? The flow chart (step7) asks if it has a stock, or was it a rifle. I searched for what CDOJ considers a rifle stock, no luck. Im guessing the stubby stock the ranch hand has is not considered a stock. So at what length does a stock become a stock?

I believe that would be considered making it an SBR. (short barreled rifle)
    That's illegal.

Ok, i understand that, so if its dros'd as a handgun, and i shoulder it with the stubby stock, does that make it an SBR? Not trying to be a PITA, trying to find out when a stock is a stock.

The law doesn't designate anything beyond "designed to be fired from the shoulder". By shoulder it as is, it doesn't become an SBR as it was not designed to be fired that way.

Not really something I'd consider worth pushing the limits of (if you plan on making it more "stock" like). YMMV. If you add an actual stock, it becomes illegal.

aaah gotcha. So basicly i would be changing the "as designed as" configuration and that would not be a good thing.
          Thank ya

A Calgunner already did what you were considering and made an SBR out of a Ranch Hand. You can try a search for it if you really, really wanted one legally and ask him on the costs and paperwork that you have to go thru.

the stock is shorter than it appears in pictures. trying to shoulder it with the stubby stock would place the hammer dangerously close to your eyes.

Tried to SBR mine in CA and it was a no go. Waited the whole 8 months and finally got the call from the ATF around Xmas. Kind of knew it was a long shot but at least I'm supposed to get my $200 back.
So just wasted my time, but she did answer my questions and she was quite surprised I wasn't pissed off or more of a jerk. I think that's why she answered all my questions so politely.

Sounds like a SBR to me, you would have to perm extend the barrel to over 16" or get a tax stamp in a state that allows them or a SOT and a love letter from local LEO, AKA no!

While the cool factor of the Ranch Hand is nice. I think I'd rather have the 4 extra inches of barrel and a real stock to make it a much more useful piece. Now that doesn't mean if I could actually get one that I wouldn't, because all things considered it would probably be a blast to shoot.

Just remember that if it would be fun or look cool it is probably illegal.

Yup, not very practical. I put a laser on mine so I can shoot from the hip though.

Unless you're Jerry Maren or built like him the "stock" on the Ranch Hand really can't function as a shoulder stock. I had a Ranch Hand for all of about 30 days before it became apparent the thing wasn't worthwhile for me. Maybe different sights, a shoulder sling and not being 6'4" or so would have helped. Lousy stained & finished and soft wood on the one I got too. On the plus side, when selling as a PPT no SSE is required. When I brought it to the gun store to sell there were 3 people who went from browsing the store in general to swarming the sales counter to snag the thing. Sold before I even finished the paperwork.
