There have been many threads lately regarding various 1911s. I had never owned one, and always wanted to add a 1911 to the collection. Honestly, I was never drawn to 45ACP, both due to higher ammo price and lower standard magazine capacity. 9mm met all my needs.
But 1911 is such an icon that I felt I had to get one eventually, so when Black Friday deals came around, I did it.
Figured I'd start with a very basic classic GI look, and got a basic RIA 1911. Changed the grips to give it more of an "authentic" look ($13.95 at Sarco).
Last Saturday, after the match at Deadwood Boys, shot it for the first time.
What can I say... It is my new favorite toy. Yes, the sights would probably not work very well in low-light situations, but the gun was amazingly accurate! I was not trying to be super accurate, was mainly interested in getting the feel for it, as it is my first 1911 and 45ACP, but the groups were very tight. Did not take pictures, and did not have paper targets, but was shooting at black painted steel, and 45 rounds print pretty well.
Amazingly rewarding feeling. Very happy with the gun. I did, however, had two FTF, when last round in the mag would not chamber. I only have one magazine that came with the gun, so I am not sure if this is magazine-related, or break-in issue. Only put 100 rounds through it so far.
Eventually, I might go for the model with all the bells and whistles - prestigious brand, beaver tail safety, combat trigger and hammer, super sights, rail, MP3 player and blue ray, etc.
- but for right now - I am a newly converted 1911 fan even with this basic model. Thank you. Mr. Browning! Oh, and you did pretty well with Hi Power, too
