    Pistol Lanyards

Tacticool or actually useful? I'm running a G-Code holster so retention isn't too much of a concern. Running matches once a month with the pistol holstered. Thoughts?

I had to use them when I was in the Navy and I hate them. I vote no. If you want one, get it though.

Just one more thing to get tangled up in when you really need to draw. I vote no.
I've never seen an American flag burned at a gun show.

Only really useful when you are shooting from horseback.

I had a Corpsman that during The Battle of Fallujah had is M9 fall out of his holster & he dragged it by the lanyard for a few blocks.

There was also a Lt who had some child steal his pistol which wasn't lanyard to him. The kid took off running & the Lt shot & killed him.

Given that, I don't normally use them...

I was thinking this. I know the RCMP (Mounties) used to use revolvers with lanyards (looks cool with the Scarlet uniforms). But you know ... mounted police who might drop a gun from horseback ...

            I'd vote "don't get one".

For one thing, if I drop a loaded gun with the safety off in some kind of "action" (ie; never) I'd prefer it hit the ground and stay there, rather than swinging around my body by a lanyard pointing all over the place. I'm confident most of my handguns are "drop safe" and I know how to safely pick up a gun that's on the ground, but I'm not sure how safe they are swinging around my body .... and I'm not sure the safest way to retrieve it while it's hanging from me, possibly twisting around...if I grab at it ... well, no guarantees if it's going to shoot me or what!

I'm thinking backpacking/hiking around or over water. No one says you need it all the time.

Seems pertinent to the situation... I think I might pick one up for backpacking but leave it for matches.

Damn that's a crap situation to be in and not sure a lanyard would have helped or made worse. I do agree with the others who mentioned when out on the water or in rough backcountry areas. With that said, I've never used one myself in either case. Not an overkill in the right environment but still personal preference.

Very neccessary tool to have on hand-if you need it
If I had to fire out of a moving vehicle or I was on an unstable platform I would want a lanyard

i have a gemtech that i bought 3 or 4 years ago, and i've probably used it once in those 3 to 4 years to go shooting on blm land. The rest of the time, it sits in the "why did I buy this" bin that resides in my closet.

One more extraneous point of gear that can get snagged while drawing or while on the move, I vote nay. (I think they're cool to have for C&R pieces though)

When I do use one I use the lanyards that look like old telephone cords. They are nice because they coil up out of the way & tend to not get snagged on every other thing.

Had a 1911 dislodge from a holster while shooting urban-prone during a carbine / pistol course. Didn't know it was gone until I hit the next obstacle and had to draw my pistol.

Needless to say, I have a pistol lanyard. In fact, two. A Gemtech and Blackhawk. Use them when hiking, too.

Hate lanyards. I can't stand cables that snag on everything. Spent a lot of years running through the woods with a paint ball gun air line and it sucked. Get a good holster and you don't need to tie it down.
