I remember when I rented 1911s at the range they said only new ammo allowed

so now after all these years, I finally ordered my own 1911, I'm wondering if it's ok to use my own reloads to break it in

They could just be forcing everyone to use clean range ammo for their rentals.

As far as breaking in a gun I like using factory ammo just so if I have any issues during break in the manufacturer can't blame me for anything.

The folks at the range don't want their guns getting blown up. The quality of factory ammo is pretty much a constant. The quality of handloads can be all over the map. Would you let someone you don't know put their handloads through your gun?

Most people suggest using factory ammo for break in because it's a known quantity. If you're shooting the gun with factory ammo and it doesn't function properly, the problem is probably with the gun. If you're shooting handloads and the gun doesn't function properly, is the problem the gun or your handloads? Do you know how close your handloads are to factory spec? Did you make an error and load this batch a bit lighter/heavier? Is the bullet seated too deep/not deep enough? Did you not crimp/taper crimp the case mouth enough? There are just too many questions to ask when you have an issue shooting a gun with handloads. With factory loads, not as many.....

If you're willing to shoot your own reloads in your own "broken in" gun, why would you hesitate to shoot reloads to "break" it in?

Just go shoot your gun.

Break in? No need to break it in. If it's not working correctly you're not going to fix it by throwing rounds down range.

EDIT: I suggest using XF7 to lube it up with. Coat the barrel, bushing, barrel lugs and get a decent amount in all the slide and frame rails. This stuff works great.

Pretty much all ranges that rent will require you to use their ammo in their rental guns. As stated above, the ranges want to know what is being put through their guns.

As for 1911 break in? Different manufacturers may make different recommendations for different models. Some will tell you to use ball ammo for the first several hundred rounds before using JHP's or reloads. Read your owners' manual.

yeah I want to put at LEAST and I say least loosely, 500-700 rounds before even thinking about using it for HD

I want my weapon systems to be 100%
my shotgun only has 110 buck/slugs through it but I still feel like I got another 240 rounds before I'll feel confident LOL

Number your magazines to weed out possible problematic magazines, then load your ammo to factory power levels and you will be able to break in your gun fine.

My Trophy Match has almost 4,000 rounds through it (3,817 to exact) and not a single one was factory. The break in period is really about breaking the rough edges and wearing in the contact points. In many cases your reloads will be more consistent than the bulk pack factory stuff (UMC Mega packs / WWB / Tula).

XF7? I have not heard of this. Can you elaborate?

It's a really good weapon grease. It's all I use on my barrel/bushing/rails. The nice thing is you can wipe the slide and frame clean after each range session.
