Need a new CCW

The Kahr PM9 gets my vote. Very light and concealable and has been 100% reliable with the 9mm 124gr +P Speer Gold Dots I carry with it.

Kahr CM9 or PM9 was on my 2nd pick, but it will require 300+ rounds to break it in before I trust it w my life.

Shield is more popular, maybe due to the brand and the look. I shot them both quite a bit and chose the Nano. I felt like it was tougher and more reliable, more capable of shooting +P until the cows come home, I liked the slick sides and no external controls, shot it extremely accurately (Shield was excellent as well, but the Nano is weirdly accurate for such a tiny gun), liked the trigger a little bit better for CCW purposes. And then the kicker for me -- it's smaller in every dimension and lighter. The difference was just sufficient that it mattered for me in terms of how it concealed.

I also liked how the internal chassis deal is the serialized part, not the frame. I picked up a FDE frame for $24 just to screw around with and stipple it and whatnot just for fun. Beretta was supposed to eventually release some different size frames that you can insert the trigger chassis into... no idea if that'll actually happen or not.

Anyway many hundreds of rounds later and it has been completely and totally 100% reliable for me. Carried it nearly every day for 18 months. No complaints. Solid pistol.

I am disturbed at how "CCW Pistol" has come to mean "pocket pistol" or sub-compact".

There is no particular reason why a Glock 17 or even a full-sized 1911 cannot be a "CCW Pistol".

With Cali weather it almost has to be a sub-compact. You can carry a full size, which I have, in the winter months under a coat but in nice weather not many people can pull off hiding a full size.

I personally like the Kahr pistols. Especially the all steal ones. They just feel super solid and well made. They are heavier but feel better in the hand. I use a K40 which is as small as I want to go in a pistol. I can still get my whole hand on it and control it like a full size pistol. Not a fan of the pinky-hanger pistols. I want a full grip.

While I haven't shot a lot of the compact guns discussed here, my Shield can easily keep up with my larger Glocks and M&Ps in terms if reliability, accuracy and shoot ability.

I have the Springfield EMP 40 and for me it shoots better then my S&W M&P 9C. I think the extra weight and trigger just make it much better.

I have both the Shield in 9mm and the PPS in 40 S&W. Both guns are the exact same size. I like both guns but think the PPS is the nicer of the two guns by a small amount. The Shield is a great gun and like it but I will be doing an APEX upgrade. I use both for CCW and just rotate between the two.

If you get the shield, start looking at Apex Tactical for some goodies to throw on it. Everyone I hear that uses their kits loves the shield even more after installing Apex components.

Call it a day and get a Glock 26 and a quality holster. You won't notice the little extra thickness but in a gun fight you'll definitely notice the extra round capacity. It's been my off duty carry for the last 6+ years.
