They are not necessary. Infact some are so bright they mess with your night sight. Almost blinding after dark.

I personally like my sights blacked out. Even at night.

If you want XS sights, go big dot and learn how to use them properly.

I don't know ... your house maybe bigger than mine but I believe that in a midnite home invasion ... I'm going to resort to point shooting. I do like to practice and I think after a while you can shoot minute of creep in the dark with your eyse closed at indoor distance.
I guess that is my way of saying I don't have any glow in the dark sights.

I have night sights on Kimber Raptor and Sig220, CT lasergrip on SW686, they are so great, but in the total darkness, if I could not see the target thus they are useless, that why the military get both laser/red dot/night sight AND flashlight.

I have shot in very dim light outdoors with the nite sites.....and I cant say enough about there performance in "low" light. When I say low light.....I mean you can still see the image....just barely that you are shooting at. Anything darker and the light goes on ......preferably sans laser.

                        cheese,
If you've read up on mp-pistol.com message boards, you'd see ToddG (resident expert "know-it-all") not approving of the xs sights for various reasons. I don't agree with him on that and would think they're just as viable as 3 dot night sights.

IMHO, a light is more of a priority if you don't already have one. If you have a weapon light or hand held light with any amount of flood..then it won't matter much what kind of sights you have. You'd have to test and see. You do need to aim, where possible in that split second decision of life or death in your home at night. I would think it's going to slow you down trying to aim with your xs sights as much as it will slow you down to shoot using a laser.

                              I've trijicon's 3 green-dots sights on all my glocks.

And I also have trijicon's AR front and rear sight on the BUIS on my AR.
