small rust problem

Hey guys,

I need your help with a minor rust problem I have. I have a cz 97b that sits in my bed side table. I shot it about a month ago and put maybe 30 rounds through it.I didnt clean it after because of the number of rounds I put through it.

I go to shoot it today and notice a small rust spot on the barrel hood. My question is what can I do to prevent more rust. Curently I use marine grease from wal mart to lube it. What should I do?

Keep your firearms clean and dry

Store them in a controlled environment (ie a safe with a Golden Rod and desiccant). If you don't have a safe, use a cabinet, foot locker, cedar chest, etc. Anything where you can control the environment and install a Golden Rod should work. Do not store them in foam lined gun cases as foam can hold moisture which leads to rust.

Check them weekly and wipe them down with a silicone cloth. Note: check them daily in the beginning until you're sure your system is working.

Keeping a light coat of oil on them will help. You could also use Renaissance Wax (love that stuff), or a product like Birchwood Casey Sheath or similar. Don't forget about the less obvious places like the mag well, etc. (ask me how I know).

I've used RIG, now made by Birchwood Casey, for many years to keep rust off of my handguns. It's a calcium sulfonate complex grease, which is a rust preventative. After handling the gun, I wipe it down with a small rag made from an old T shirt impregnated with the grease that I keep in a plastic bag. So treated, none of my handguns or long guns has shown a speck of rust in over 40 years. Give it a try.

By the way: "RIG" stands for Rust Inhibiting Grease.

Back in the day I put my 1994 USP 40 away for a while, and when I pulled it out a month later, there was a rust mark that was the exact shape of my finger print, fine lines and all on the barrel hood.... that was when they had the polished unprotected hood on top.

thanks guys. I will find a box that I can store it in. I just have to make sure its always ready because we have had 3 home invasions in the past 6 months in our neighborhood.

I just use Eezox for the long term storage (becasue it's relatively pricy), and Breakfree CPL for more regular use, with no issues.

Hey guys thanks alot. I know I should keep it clean. I just figured I would try not being ocd this one time but now I saw what happens lol. I will look for the products you guys recommend. Thanks for the advise and info.

If it is a just a small surface rust... try to order a can of Eezox, spray on the rusting area, wait a couple minutes, and wipe it clean.

Eezox is probably the best rusting protection/prevention product I have used (keeps my Remington 870 Express receiver rust free, that speaks a lot )

I used to use Eezox to CLP all my guns, it did the job very well. The only drawback to me was its smell.

Use Eezox, works great although a little tough to get. I even put it on the blades of my garden tools in my shed with no issues.
