Sig 226 vs 228 vs 229

What are the differences between the three? I think the 226 is the largest of the three? Is there any practical differences? I considering one of the three for a nightstand/HD pistol.

Can't speak for the 228 from memory but the 226 is full size and the 229 is a carry size

The P228 & P229 are the same pistol. The difference comes from the slide manufacturing process. The P229 utilizes a slide milled from Stainless. The P228 utilizes a folded/welded slide assembly

For the most part, both the P220 & P226 are full size pistols. Sig Sauer does offer a P220R "compact" variant. The P229 is a compact.

Google is your friend. P226 is a full size, chambered in 9; I've been very happy with mine. I don't care for the new LCI; if you decide to go with a 226, look for an older one on Marketplace.

I keep a P226mk25 with a Surfire X300 light mounted and Winchester Ranger T 124gr JHP ammo in it.

Better from a carry standpoint. More concealable.

I have a 229R and a 226R. If I can find a P228R, I would get that instead.

After shooting my 229 in 9mm, it became my favorite over 226 in 9mm. But that just me and once again, it's all about preference.

Old school P226 and all P228 have folded slides. They are in 9mm only.

New P226 and all P229 have milled stainless steel slides. They come in 9mm, 40S&W, and 357 Sig.

Old school P226, most P228, and some P229, don't have rails.

Vast majority of new P series Sigs have rails.

It all comes down to which gun and which caliber you are more comfortable with. I prefer the P226 in 9mm. It's the biggest so obviously least fun to carry. But then again do you really conceal carry your P226 at home? Being the biggest, it's easiest to shoot due to more mass. Its grip is also slightly larger than P228/9. I have no experience with the new E2 grip though (supposedly thinner and more comfortable).

My nightstand gun is an older Sig 220. It fits my hand and gives good reliability and accuracy.

Not really better just different. There are many owners who will tell you that the 228 is perfect with its folded slide

SIG went with the milled slides to help contain the pressures of the .40, when they wanted to chamber it ins a 228 sized gun. The slide of the 9mm 229 is lighter than that of the .40/357SIG ones

They balance very differently and the 228 will swing much faster, between targets, then a 226
