    Pistol give away. Which one?

My younger brother just move into his first house with his new wife and his view of the would is starting to change now that he has something to care for besides himself. I am no longer the just gun nut on the family tree. So being the GREAT brother I am I was thinking of surprising him with one of my pistols I really don't shoot anymore. A Star starvel firestar 9mm or a Taurus pt945 .They have both served me well and the Taurus was my only weapon for years untill I could afford something better. Glock 20!
    Taurus-Pros:
    45acp!
    Double action decocker
    accurate due to ported barrel
    Cons:
Ported Barrel this thing BREATHES fire nicknamed "The Dragon"
    Firestar-Pros:
    9mm ammo is cheaper
Size he has small hands(something I never let him forget!)
accurate at SD range it's MOBG
    Cons:
Single action maybe a bit much to master. I don't see him putting in the range time for it to become second nature.
So there. Either way it's only going to cost me the transfer fees and maybe I can get someone else shooting

Take him shooting and see which one he likes better. Is that an option?

Since you say they're both reliable, I'd say to give him the 9mm due to hand size and lack of shooting/practice. The .45, although not heavy in recoil, may cause more of a flinch than a 9mm in new shooters.

Maybe take him out and let him decide after shooting both?

I'm trying to limit his options at first.I know him well.I could see him going for the .45 just because its a .45 and not hitting the target once.So the one I put in his hand should be close to what might work for him. He will get better at it if only to beat me at some competition on day(NEVER!). I have to Xmas eve and if I'm still stumped I'll hand him both and off to the range!

Depending on his experience level, Id give him the 9. Cheaper and easier to shoot(subjective), and like you said, smaller for his hands.

                Very cool of you, sir!

Can you take him to the range first?

If so, have him run a magazine through each one @ 7 yards and give him the one he shoots a better group with.

I hate to say it but I'd almost go one step further and buy him a new glock 19 or 17. Easy for a new by and an awesome reliable gun.

yes, be super awesome by getting him a gun he chooses because he can shoot it well and reliably.

Chick and Lead that cross my mind to but starting out with those two pistols really gave me a good foundation when it was time to upgrade.

I suggest then not "giving" him the gun, but lend him the 9mm. Tell him if learns to use it, then next Christmas, you'll go gun shopping with him.

But of course, don't just hand it over to him, bring him to the range, bring both pistols. Teach him a thing or two and then ask which one he'd like (either to borrow of to have).

Very nice of you! Lucky brother!

My brother is a clutz an very mechanically disinclined. He and I are on polar opposites in terms of handiness. I'd be hard pressed to give him a gun and think that he won't hurt himself. If I had to though, I'd give him my S&W 686 and .38 specials, and leave the semi autos in my safe!
I'm not saying he's a simpleton, but he has no inclination towards shooting sports and he's more of a "people person" than a "can use a screwdriver" person.
