    9mm Largo is wonderful.

Recently had the pleasure of shooting and Astra 400 in 9mm Largo. After reading a bit on the 'net I had more or less written the cartridge off in relation to my interest in acquring a pistol and ammo.

But after firing the Aastra I have a LOT more respect for 9mm Largo. It certainly seemed more powerful than the regular 9mm stuff we were also shooting at the reange that day. More powerful than either the practice 9mm ammo or the Remington Golden Sabres in +P as well.

I have to say the caliber and cartridge was a lot more impressive in use than I have read about. I am actually interested in acquiring something that fires the Largo round after having shot some Surprised thee were not more firearms that used this round.

What kind of ammo were you shooting and where did you buy it? And it is generally smart to keep .38super out of 9mmLargo guns. I have 2x Astra 400's and a Destroyer carbine. I will add a Star mod A for a cheap price if 1 pops up.

The Largo is a cool round. It seems to me that in a modern pistol one would be able to get some great ballistics.

I saw it, thought that was high. Sarco did or does sell them around $150 or less.

The older 1960's Santa Barbara ammo is corrosive. The newer stuff is not but may be higher in pressure for SMG use. CCI Blazer did make 9largo ammo but is now only in very limited runs or not at all. It ran a bit hot too.

My Astra 400's are marked 9mm/38 bcause the extractors were designed to work with 9largo and .38acp which is exactly the same as .38super but loaded to lower pressures.

.38acp chambered Colts, not to be confused with .380acp, have not been made since circa 1929. If you have any more specisfic questions of 9Largo feel free to ask and a trip to 9mmlargo.com would be good for anyone with interest in the guns and ammo in this caliber.

Received and replied. The modern 9Largo is basically the 9x23 Winchester cartridge. Some Colts were chambered in it. It's basically a hot .38super w/o the semi rim.

Colt made some 1911a1 patterns in 9mm Steyr. Colt made 1911a1's in 9x23 winchester also. The Star model A in 9mm Largo is somewhat similar but no grip safety and trigger and some other details are different.

Qe were using the newer Santa Barbara ammo. The 400 seemed to be fine after the shoot.

The Astra 400's are a bit hard to take apart also. The movie Millers Crossing features one. They sometimes can be picked up cheap as most are unfamiliar with them and also because most people in the USA think all Spanish guns are junk.

One I got in a trade with a calgunner, it was around $100 with all said and done. The other I came across at around $85.

I see them sometimes at $150-200. Turners in Norwalk wants $500 for one but that store is notorious for overpricing the consignments/used guns.

$500 maybe for one in real nice shape that fell in the Nazi delivered serial number range.

                      I also have 2x Astra 600's in 9x19 and I recently sold a Nazi marked Mod 300 .380acp.
