HELP please. '68 Colt Python

I recently acquired a 1968 Colt Python that has (supposedly) been plated many years ago ('68) with an electroplate dull nickel colored coating to protect the surface.The coating has started to flake in some spots and you can see the dark blue underneath the coating. Anybody heard of this?
I remember reading about the process many years ago but have never seen an example.

Sounds like someone did a poor refinish job.

Since it's a Python you might want to consider sending it to Colt for a refinish. It's not cheap (better part of $500 with the shipping) but it will come back looking new and done correctly. Colt provides Royal Blue, Bright Nickel, Electroless Nickel and several other finishes.

After they plated it, they didn't even have the common courtesy cut some springs and file down half dozen parts, and add a compensator, before they returned it to the owner I bet.

If your Python was bead blasted before electroless nickel plating it's going to take a lot of work to restore it to Royal Blue and it may require roll mark restoration. A good durable finish like Metalloy Hard Chrome would be a lot less expensive.
